Montesano 2, Elma 1

(Montesano, WA) On a rainy and windy night the Montesano Bulldogs hosted the Elma Eagles. The Bulldogs came in sitting atop the EVCO 1A at 5-0 and 6-1-1 overall while the Eagles were 4-1 in league play and 5-3 overall. Elma’s lone stumble in league play so far was a 2-1 loss to Hoquiam whose 3-2-1 in league play.

As the match got underway the Bulldogs were able to push the ball down the field and got an early corner kick. As the ball was booted it came up short and another Bulldog chipped it up into the box where an Eagle defender tried to head it out but instead knocked it into his own goal to give the home team a quick 1-0 lead.

Elma would even the match in the 22nd minute when they scored a goal for themselves. Off a corner kick that was rejected by the Bulldogs was re-captured at midfield and a ended up with Cason Seaburg who attempted a shot but was blocked and the loose ball ended up right in front of Theo Flores who got enough on it to get it past the Bulldogs keeper Jayden McElravy in the left side of the net. That’s how the game would stand heading to halftime.

Montesano began the 2nd half with an aggressive offensive attack sending Felix Romero, Mateo Sanchez and Luke Clements deep into Eagle territory. In the 48th minute Romero took a pass and broke away then flipped it to the right side of the goal just out of reach of Eagles keeper Andy Salvatierra to re-take the lead at 2-1.

After taking the lead the two teams would both build credible attacks and counters but neither able to finish with a goal. Montesano’s defense tightened as did Elma’s and the Bulldogs held on to the 2-1 victory to push their league mark to 6-0 while Elma drops to 4-2 in league play.

Our Thorbeckes MVP’s went to Montesano’s Felix Romero and Elma’s Amador Ramirez-Martinez.
