This is our 2nd year of crowning overall Champions. Each classification and sport has their own individual Champions played out on the fields and courts. This is a look at the overall sports programs in all schools and how they stacked up when we take into consideration every sport and give each sport the same amount of importance.

We created our scoring system that rewards consistency over 1 big Championship. It’s great to be the State Basketball Champs for both girls and boys but how did your school’s cross country team or golf team or swim team do?

Some of the classification’s have an advantage over others when it come to comparing classifications against others for example the B’s do not have Girls Bowling or boys Swimming so they cannot earn points in those sports. This is why our first focus is the individual classification Champions for each boys and girls. So we will have a Champion for 4A boys and 4A girls all the way down to 1B. We then will combine the the boys and girls teams together for a single classification winner for 4A all the way down to 1B.

Finally, and this is where the larger schools do have an advantage with more sports to participate, the All Classification Combined Champion. This is how we scored each and every tournament. For tournaments that clearly had 8 places each place got the points assigned to that placing. When there are multiple teams tied for one place such as all the quraterfinal losers in football all get 5th place which is a total of 4 teams. We take the points 5th-8th which are 8-6-4-2 for a total of 20 and divide it by 4 so each team gets 5 points. Same for semi-final losers they divide 26 points for 13 each. Here’s the full scoring breakdown:

20pts for 1st place
17pts for 2nd
14pts for 3rd
12pts for 4th
8pts for 5th
6pts for 6th
4pts for 7th
2pts for 8th

All-Classification Overall Champion

Sehome 153 points

The Sehome Mariners did not win either the 2A boys or 2A girls but finished 2nd in each one with the girls scoring 74 points and the boys 79 and dominated the combined 2A. The Mariners were state Champions in boys track and tennis, 2nd in cross country, 3rd in soccer and 5th in golf. The girls also won 2 state titles in cross country and golf and a pair of 2nd places in soccer and track. The Mariners were the clear All-Classification Champions.
