(Sumner, WA) Distict 3/4 4A Soccer 2nd round was Tuesday night and at Sumner it was the consolation bracket with winners playing again on Thursday and losers out. Kennedy Catholic faced Camas in the 5:30pm match-up and Kentridge battled Union in the 2nd game. Below is our coverage of both games.

Game 1

Camas 3, Kennedy Catholic 2 (OT)

The Papermakers and Lancers had a long feeling out process before Camas struck first in the 27th minute on a goal from Freshman Pax Epstein. Camas’s backline and keeper William Taves did a great job denying several strong scoring runs by Kennedy Catholic to keep them at zero through the 1st 40 minutes and at the break it was 1-0 Camas.

In the 2nd half the Lancers stepped up their attack and it paid off in the 51st when a foul in the box led to a Colin Claxton PK and the match was all even at 1-1. It didn’t take long for K-C to take their 1st and only lead just 4 minutes later as Oscar Castillo broke free and fired a laser into the net giving the Lancers a 2-1 lead.

That advantage would not last long as Camas flipped the script in less than 5 minutes and scored the equalizer in the 60th on a blast from Markku Laukkanen and it was 2-2. That score would last to the end of regulation and they would head to OT.

The 1st 5-minute golden goal overtime didn’t take long as the Lancers committed a foul in the box only about a minute or so into the 1st OT. This set up Senior Captain Luke Jones to quickly finish the match and he did so pounding the PK into the goal for the win.

Camas will now face Union on Thursday in a winner to state, loser must play again on Saturday to try and get in to state match. The game was originally scheduled to be at Bethel HS in Spanaway will now be played down south at Fishback Stadium at Washougal High School on Thursday, at 7pm. Camas improves to 15-1-2 on the season.

Kennedy Catholic finishes 11-6-0 for the year and their season is over after this heartbreaking defeat.

Game 2

Union 3, Kentridge 1

(Sumner, WA) In game 2 at Sumner it was the Union Titans taking on the Kentridge Chargers and the Titans came out firing scoring quickly in the 5th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Aaron Anitok-Brokken powered home the shot for the quick early lead. It appeared that the Titans may start adding to that lead but a solid performance in the box from Kentridge keeper Patrick O’Brien kept the Chargers in the game.

Kentridge finally got their opportunity just before the 1st half expired when Emmanuel Enosa bounced a shot off the hard turf over the head and just out of the reach  of Union keeper Jesus Gutierrez and they went to the break in a 1-1 tie and some big momentum for the underdog Chargers.

As the 2nd half began both keepers were making runs at our MVP award as they locked down their boxes until the 57th minute. A foul was called against Kentridge just outside the box and Union’s Canaan Moore quickly spotted the ball and booted it in while the Chargers thought that time had been called because of the official’s whistle.

Although the play upset the Chargers as they were expecting a chance to get lined up and didn’t in the end it didn’t matter much because Moore struck again in less than a minute on an attack and in about 60-seconds the game went from a toss-up to Union taking a commanding 3-1 lead with 22 minutes to play.

Kentridge could never get that momentum back and Gutierrez was fantastic in the box for the Titans denying Kentridge multiple chances to get back into the match and would secure the win advancing to face Camas on Thursday in a winner to state, loser will have to play on Saturday for a chance at state.

Union improves to 16-2-0 on the season and Kentridge had their season come to an end finishing the year with an 8-6-2 record.
