(Seattle, WA)

The Seattle Kraken closed out the 2024-25 campaign with a 6-5 loss to the Los Angeles Kings. Los Angeles in the third period led 6-2, with the Kraken nearly pulling off the comeback. Seattle finishes the season with 76 points in the standings and a record of 35-41-6.

Los Angeles tallied their six goals from; Alex Turcotte, Warren Foegele, Alex Laferriere, Adrian Kempe, and two from Samuel Helenius.

Seattle had five different Kraken score; Tye Kartye, Brandon Montour, Jaden Schwartz, Matty Beniers, and Eeli Tolvanen.

The Kings were playing on the back end of a back to back that began in Edmonton. Los Angeles ensured home ice advantage against the Edmonton Oilers in the first round with a 5-0 win the previous night. This season marks the fourth straight year the Kings faced the Oilers in the playoffs.

Seattle hoped to finish the 2025 campaign on a high note with one of the standout performers in Joey Daccord between the pipes for game 82. Tuesday night also marked the first NHL game for Ville Ottavainen, who took a rookie lap in warmups.

The Kraken controlled the tempo of play in the early stages, but the scoreboard did not reflect as such through the first period. Two Kings goals from Samuel Helenius and Alex Turcotte put the Kraken in a 2-0 hole after 20 minutes. Seattle outshot Los Angeles 11-5 in the period.

Vince Dunn took a double minor penalty for Seattle early in the period. However, Tye Kartye took advantage of a stray Los Angeles pass and scored a shorthanded goal on a breakaway. The Kraken trimmed the deficit down to one at 5:26 of the middle frame.

Brandon Montour leveled the game with a blast from the high slot to tie the game at 13:24 of the second.

The Kings tilted the axis of the game minutes later. LA lit the lamp twice in 1:12 on goals from Warren Foegele and Alex Leferriere to restore a two goal lead at the end of the second period.

The Kings saw goals early in the third from Adrian Kempe and the second from Samuel Helenius to up their lead to 6-2.

Seattle mounted their comeback with Jaden Schwartz scoring from the slot 5:12 into the third. Kraken defenseman Ville Ottavainen assisted on Schwartz’s goal which was his first National Hockey League point. Matty Beniers tipped in a Jordan Eberle pass to trim the Kings lead down to 6-4. Seattle generated plenty of offensive looks that had Eeli Tolvanen scoring the last goal of the season with 30 seconds left.

Although the Kings won 6-5, the game in many ways was a microcosm of the Kraken season. Amidst the challenges they encountered, their grit and resolve could not be questioned.

The Kraken awarded their end of season awards after the game. The Guyle Fielder Award for dedication, perseverance, and hustle went to Jaden Schwartz. The 14 year NHL vet scored 26 goals this season, the second most in his career.

Joey Daccord won the Three Stars Award and Muldoon Team MVP Honors. Daccord set career highs in games played (57) and wins (27). The year for Daccord has seen him take more of the starting role for Seattle, and there is without question he will be a large factor for next year’s Kraken hopes.

The fan favorite of the year went to Brandon Montour. After two straight years of heading to the Stanley Cup Final, Montour set a career high for goals in a season with 18. The highlights of his season came against Montreal. Early in the season in Montreal, Montour tallied a hat trick and an assist in a Kraken rout of the Habs. In Seattle, Montour capped off another four point game against Montreal, punctuated by the fastest overtime goal in NHL history at four seconds.

Seattle bids farewell to the 2024-25 campaign with expectations for next season as elevated as ever.
