(Covington, WA) Yesterday, Druids Glen Golf Course hosted a U.S. Open Local Qualifier. 93 players teed it up, with only five players advancing to Final Qualifying.
John Barker from Canada took medalist honors, firing a bogey-free, 5-under 66. Rudy Caparas from Everett and Jordan Brajcich from Mill Creek each shot 4-under 67s to share second place. Amateur Jacob Kang from Mill Creek shot 3-under 68 to take solo fourth place, and three players tied for fifth. Colten Kleis, an amateur from Seattle, Matthew Daniel from Blaine, and Daniel Campbell from Bellingham all shot 2-under 69. In the three-for-one playoff, Colten Kleis outlasted Campbell and Daniel to secure the last spot from this Local Qualifier spot, and will also advance to Final Qualifying. Matthew Daniel and Daniel Campbell are the two alternates from this site.
Only nine players total shot under par, while 23 players shot 80 and over. Druids Glen, today playing as a par 71, averaged 76.31, with both nines playing nearly identical. The first nine, par 35, averaged 38.18 while the second nine, par 36, averaged 38.12. The hardest hole on the course was the ninth hole, a 415-yard par four saw an average score of 4.62. The easiest hole on the course was the 14th hole, a 524-yard par five, which played under par at 4.88. There were two eagles on that hole, and only four eagles all day long. Druids Glen is usually a par 72 course, but today, the second hole was shortened to a 461-yard par four, to make the front par 35 rather than the traditional par 36.
On May 13, Palouse Ridge Golf Club in Pullman will host another Local Qualifier. On June 2, Wine Valley Golf Club in Walla Walla will host a Final Qualifier, and the players advancing from that will head to the 125th U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania.
