(Sumner, WA)

Braulio Navarrete scored in the 78th minute coupled with another Casey Compean shutout to lead Emerald Ridge past Sumner 1-0. The win puts ER in the 4th Seed in Districts where they face Olympia. Sumner falls to the 6th seed where they travel to face Union on Saturday.

Emerald Ridge is the turnaround story of 4A SPSL this year. After finishing 5-10-1 last year, Head Coach Trevor Kawamura has turned the Jaguars program around with a record of 11-2-1 coming into Tuesday night. Emerald Ridge came into the evening with a seven match win streak, allowing only one goal during that span. Sumner sought to build on their state appearance from last season under Head Coach Craig Johnson. The Spartans suffered a 4-1 loss last week to Olympia, hoping for a change of momentum Tuesday night.

The regular season finale carried a lot of value in the regular season standings. A win or draw from Emerald Ridge assured them the 2nd placed spot in the SPSL. A win from Sumner would put them in second place. Emerald Ridge could drop as low as third with a loss, and Sumner could fall to as low as fourth with a defeat.

The first half saw the goalkeepers shining. Sumner’s Kyle Goodrow and Emerald Ridge’s Casey Compean keeping clean sheets through the first half. The keepers continued to maintain their shutouts, with Goodrow making several impressive saves to keep the match scoreless. In the closing minutes, Sumner’s Reese Bywater made a goal line clearance, keeping the match level.

In the 78th minute, Braulio Navarrete beamed a shot off the goal post and off Kyle Goodrow and into the net. The goal stood as the winner to stun Sumner.

With the win, Emerald Ridge finished in 2nd in the SPSL Standings, while Sumner with an Olympia win dropped to fourth in the league. Sumner will play on the road against Union on Saturday in the opening round of districts. Emerald Ridge faces SPSL foe Olympia in a rematch of a tilt won by Emerald Ridge earlier this season 2-0.
