5/24 #5 Hazen @ #4 Puyallup 1pm @ Sparks Stadium
(Puyallup, WA)
The Hazen Highlanders came into Saturday’s match off of a 1-0 win over Lincoln of Seattle and are looking for their first state trophy since they won it all in 2007. It took Puyallup scoring in the 2nd overtime against Lake Stevens to secure their spot in the quarterfinals. Puyallup last played in the state title game in 2023 but fell to Skyline 2-0.
The Puyallup Vikings got the win over Lake Stevens but it was at a cost as several starters got injured in the match namely Curran Caufield (Puyallup’s second leading scorer) and Caden Duong a standout senior defender. Zack Robertson was also banged up but was available for Saturday’s match. In the first half the Highlanders got the goal scoring going in the 14th minute when a long pass found Vitaly Polyukh just outside the 18 yard box. Polyukh was able to dodge on defender and used a burst of speed to get by another before sending a low shot under the reach of Puyallup keeper Alexis Cruz Hernandez. Cruz Hernandez was under pressure in the first half recording 5 saves and only allowing one goal. Hazen goalie Owen Pruitt notched 3 first half saves but his back line was rock solid all game long.
The second half started with a bang as Zack Robertson got the start for Puyallup and in the 45th minute drew a foul just outside of the 18 yard box. That set piece would be taken by sophomore Adrian Macias and skim off the head of Robertson for the equalizer and his 30th goal of the season. Hazen kept up the attacking and in the 55th minute would earn their 3rd and final corner of the match. Junior midfielder Kai Hirano stepped up and got the “Olimpico” goal, breaking the tie. In the 58th minute it looked like Hazen was gonna score again but were turned away on back to back shot attempts by the Viking defenders. From there Puyallup ratcheted up the attack earning 5 corners all in the 2nd half but would be turned away time and time again. In the end, Hirano’s goal was the game winner and he was named our Thorebecks MVP. Cruz Hernandez ended up with 9 saves for Puyallup while Pruitt notched 5 for Hazen.
Puyallup’s Season comes to an end with a 16-3-1 record. Hazen advances to the final 4 is set to meet #8 Wenatchee in the semis after the Panthers upset the #1 seed Tahoma Bears on Friday night.

The #13 Lake Stevens Vikings came to Sparks Stadium trying to find the same magic the now State Champion girls program did in the fall. The host Puyallup Viking had to shake off an overtime loss in the district 3/4 playoffs. The Viking from Lake Stevens struck first on a long throw-in by Lucas Mooring that was headed home by George Meadows Morrice 8 minutes into the match. Lake Stevens senior keeper Brayden Zakimi was a brick wall in the first half with 7 saves and kept an aggressive Puyallup offense at bay. The first half ended with a 1-0 Lake Stevens lead.
The Puyallup offense was just as aggressive at the start of the 2nd half. Puyallup’s Coleman Farmer earned the first penalty kick opportunity in the 47th on a nice run down the goal line. Curran Caufield took the PK but sent it sailing over the crossbar. In the 65th minute Farmer was at it again showing off his footwork and dribbling skills when he was taken down in the penalty area. With Caufield out with an injury sophomore Seth Foster stepped up and buried the shot to even the score at 1. Each team had their chances but at the end of regulation the score remained tied at 1-1.
Early in the 1st overtime it was Puyallup keeper Alexis Cruz Hernandez that made a spectacular save to keep his team’s season alive. The Puyallup Vikings had the first possession of the 2nd overtime period and didn’t waste time. Less than 30 seconds into senior Zack Robertson sent a perfect pass up the field to Robert Safin who let the ball bounce once in the 18 yard box before volleying it home to end the game.
Coleman Farmer was named our Thorbeckes MVP for his relentless play throughout the game. Puyallup will play Hazen on Saturday April 24th. Lake Stevens season comes to an end at 13-6.
