1st Mercer Island
2nd Shorewood
(May 31) @ Carl Sparks Stadium
#3 Mercer Island 3 #1 Shorewood 2
In a 3A Championship match that had two penalty kicks and 10 combined corners it was the Mercer Island Islanders that came out on top.
In the first half Shorewood started out with a lot of the possession in the Islanders defensive area. A foul in the box in the 23rd minute led to the first PK of the match. Stormrays leading scorer Niki Genadiev stepped up to take the penalty shot hard and low to the left but Adam Kiviat Mercer Islands freshman keeper read it and made the save seemingly giving the Islanders a spark. Both Genadiev and Kiviat play for the Sounders Academy.
Ben Park helped fan that spark with a slicing shot on goal in the 37th minute for the 1-0 MI lead.Tyler Shelton connected with Bridge Gerry on a free kick in the 48th to extend Mercer Islands lead to 2 goals. Just 4 minutes later Tyler Shelton would strike again this time scoring himself on a chip shot goal to make it 3-0 and the Islanders were on fire.
The Stormrays came rolling in late in the match. Senior Matthew Bereket got the Stormrays on the board in the 70th minute on a shot that got through a congested 18 yard box. In the 78+ minute stoppage time a Shorewood player got fouled in the penalty area again earning PK number 2. Daniel Bruno stepped up this time and converted making it 3-2 and the Stormrays were surging.
However time would run out and the Islanders weathered the Stormrays in the end. Raising the Championship trophy for the 2nd time in program history. This was Shorewood’s first championship appearance since 1980 and where they also placed 2nd.
