(Auburn, Wa) First of all, this is one of Eli Sports’ busiest weekend of the year. We live stream high school sports and we were at 7 different locations this weekend from Bellingham to Tacoma to Yakima. It was the final weekend of prep sports and we did all the Championships for Baseball, Soccer and 12 state Track meets.

So the coverage this week is going to be shorter than most weeks as we not only live video stream those events and this year we have done about 1,500 live events in 9 months, we also write stories and add highlights to our coverage. We’re not complaining but sometimes we simply run out of time.

Looking at what happened on Saturday and then the Sunday card and Grandparents race we’re sorry to miss this weekend.

Enough of our sob story let’s get to the Saturday races and highlights.

7th Race Feature Race

Grease Missile w/Isaias Enriquez

A field of 7 older fillies and mares went 5 1/2-furlongs and the odds-on favorite Grease Missile with Isaias Enriquez were sent off at the odds of 3-5. Turning for home Grease Missile had a 4 length lead over her stablemate 6-1 Zippin Sevenz with Alex Cruz who had been in the stalking position for the entire trip. 9-2 Crystal Proof and Kevin Orozco ran an even 3rd with 7-1 Our Lyla Grace and Javier Matias completing the superfecta.

4th Race

Settler’s Cove w/Jennifer Whitaker

The 6-furlong dash had 6 older fillies and mares and the bettors couldn’t have been more wrong. The longest shot on the board, and by a long ways, Settler’s Cove at 28-1 went to the front setting soft fractions of 22.48 and 45.89. Jockey Jennifer Whitaker actually lost the lead to 8-5 favorite Caly Bali and Silvio Amador by a head at the top of the stretch and most figured that be it for the longshot but they were incorrect.

Settler’s cove dug back in on the rail and eased away from Caly Bali and kept Parker’s Fifteen with Kevin Orozco at bay to pull the stunning upset. English Meadow with Pablo Castillo would finish 4th.

Settler’s Cove gave Whitaker her 1st win since September 17th, 2023 when she brought Muncey to the winners circle. She missed all of last year with a severe leg injury and this was her 4th ride back from her injury. Settler’s Cove is owned, trained and bred by HOF conditioner Howard Belvoir. In the finale it was as close to a triple deadheat as we’ve had in a long time. 7 broke from the gate going 5 1/2-furlongs and the 2-1 second favorite Glimpse of Gold with Carlos Montalvo but this time couldn’t hold off the closers. 12-1 Sumthintotalkabout with Kevin Orozco stalked in 4th then engaged Glimpse of Gold in deep stretch while closing from midpack was 1-1 favorite Burnin at Midnight with Frank Alvarado and the trio hit line together. After the photo finish the upset winner Sumthintotalkabout and Orozco got nose win, Glimpse of Gold just missed and held 2nd by a nose with Burnin at Midnight needing literally one more stride. 2-1 Lady Mormont and Manny Americano ran 4th with 33-1 La’ Momina and Silvio Amador completing the Super Hi Five.

The winning time was 1:05.76 and Sumthintotalkabout runs for Patti Justice and is trained by Howard Gibson. The 4-year-old winning filly is a Washington bred by Misremembered out of Appomattox by Stravinsky and was bred by Patti and Dean Justice and Jennifer Nunnally.
