(Clarkston, WA) The 18th Washington Super Senior Men’s Championship was held at Red Wolf Golf Club in Clarkston this week. It’s a 54-hole Championship that took place from June 3-5. The Super Senior division consists of men 65 years or older, all have an active GHIN number and a handicap index that doesn’t exceed 12.4.
Richard Jonson, from Seattle, won the Super Senior Men’s Amateur Championship at 9-over par. Jonson won by just one shot over Jim McNelis from Gig Harbor. Jonson started the Championship with a 77, but rallied with the round of the day in the second round, firing a 73. In the final round, Jonson shot 75, including a 1-under 35 on the back nine to win by one shot. Jonson didn’t make a birdie in the final round until the 11th hole, but finished with three birdies in the last eight holes.
McNelis finished the Championship at 10-over par, after rounds of 75, 76, and 75. McNelis got off to a great start in the final round, with birdies on two of his first four holes, but bogeyed five of the last 12, including back-to-back bogeys on 16 and 17 to take second place. John Gallacher from Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada had the first round lead after shooting an even par 72. He followed that up with a 79 and 76 to take third place at 11-over. Karl Smith from Gig Harbor took fourth at 12-over, and Norm Bradley from Kelowna, BC, Brian Baldwin from Kent, Jim Akers from Fall City, and Scott McBeath from Bellingham all tied for fifth at 13-over par.
