(Phoenix, AZ) It’s not too often a team pulls off the kind of comeback the Seattle Mariners had on Monday night and has to put that game in the past to try to bounce back from a loss. A heartbreaking series opener with the Arizona Diamondbacks had the Mariners tested going into game two on Tuesday night. On a sinking ship, a couple of guys would need to step up and be heroes to try to get this team back on track.

A rotation shuffle was done by the Mariners with Bryce Miller being placed on the IL. Bryan Woo was pushed back a day and Logan Evans was recalled to pitch in game two on Tuesday after barely pitching anywhere for the last two weeks. For Arizona, postseason hero Brandon Pfaadt would get the ball after a string of bad starts.

Diamondbacks 10, Mariners 3 (Game Two)

Seattle looked like they would get off to a strong start in the 1st. Cal Raleigh and Jorge Polanco both singled with two outs, but both were left stranded. In the bottom of the 1st, a two-out double by Geraldo Perdomo gave Arizona a chance to put up the game’s first run. A single by Josh Naylor looked to do just that, but Randy Arozarena had other plans. The Mariners left fielder made a strong throw to the plate and Cal Raleigh was able to get the tag down to cut down Perdomo. The great throw and tag combination kept the game scoreless after one.

In the 2nd and 3rd, the Mariners left runners stranded in scoring position thanks in part to Lourdes Gurriel Jr. robbing Cal Raleigh of what would have been his 27th home run. In the bottom of the 3rd, the tie was broken. A one-out walk allowed by Logan Evans to Alek Thomas put a man on for the top of the order. Corbin Carroll was able to hook one into the right field corner for extra bases. Thomas and Carroll both possess great speed and Thomas scored while Carroll reached third with his seventh triple of the season. A sacrifice fly by Geraldo Perdomo brought in Carroll and Arizona had a 2-0 lead.

Things just continued to be wasted by the Mariners. A Dominic Canzone one-out double was stranded in the 4th and J.P. Crawford stole his way into scoring position in the 5th where he was left on. Arizona added a run in each of those innings. First, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. smoked a solo home run for his 10th of the year. Then in the 5th with runners on the corners, Josh Naylor sent a ground-rule double to right to add on another run. Seattle’s missed chances were catching up to them as they trailed 4-0 going into the 6th.

Finally the M’s would have a breakthrough in the 6th. It would not come with anyone on base, but it would come off the bat of Randy Arozarena. After fouling a ball of his shin, Arozarena smashed a 435-foot blast to left field for his eighth home run of the year. Then came Rowdy Tellez who also fouled a ball off of his leg. It ended the same way. Tellez crushed his 10th homer of the year 445-feet over the Diamondbacks pool in right center. The back-to-back home runs gave the Mariners some momentum and cut their deficit in half to 4-2.

Seattle would leave a couple on in the 6th before turning the game over to their bullpen in the home half. Trent Thornton was shaky as he allowed a Lourdes Gurriel Jr. single and walked Pavin Smith right out of the gate. Then things got out of hand for the Mariners. Gabriel Moreno fell behind at 1-2 before Thornton hung a sweeper at the top of the zone. Moreno got all of it, sending his fifth home run of the season to left. The three-run blast took Seattle’s momentum right back and gave the D-Backs a 7-2 lead. A single by Alek Thomas and a second triple in the game for Corbin Carroll followed by a sacrifice fly put the cap on the 6th with Arizona leading 9-2.

Julio Rodríguez got one back for the Mariners with an RBI single in the 8th, but the D-Backs got that run back on Alek Thomas’ third home run of the season in the home half of the inning. For the fourth time this season, the Mariners allowed double digit runs as they were blown out by Arizona in game two, 10-3.

What’s Next

Seattle (33-33) continues to free fall just like they did in June of last season. To make things worse, Texas defeated Minnesota 16-4 while the Angels beat the Athletics 2-1. The only good thing for Seattle is that the Houston Astros lost their series opener to the Chicago White Sox 4-2, which keeps the Mariners three games back in the AL West. However, the Angels are now just four games back and the Rangers only 4 1/2 as the middle of the pack bunches up.

The M’s will try to turn around their month of horrors and salvage the finale of the three-game series on Wednesday at 12:40pm against Arizona. Bryan Woo will be on the mound for the second consecutive outing looking to avoid being swept. Woo (5-3, 3.07 ERA) has his streak of four consecutive quality starts snapped in his last outing against Baltimore, thanks in large part to a couple of homers. It will be veteran lefty Eduardo Rodríguez (1-3, 6.70 ERA) getting the ball for Arizona in the finale. The Snakes southpaw has had a really tough first year in the desert, but is coming off his best start when he allowed just two runs on six hits and no walks in five innings against Cincinnati.
