(Auburn, WA) In this week’s “Track Wire” we’ll re-cap some of the highlights from last weekend’s racing including the 1st Friday night of racing.

Then we release the first edition of our season stats complete with Jockey, Trainer, Owner and Breeder stats, high and low season pays, the handles, fields sizes and more. For our stat geeks you’ll love digging through the numbers at the bottom of this post.

Before we get to that, we’ll break down some of the numbers and compare them to last season. Let’s get going with this week’s Track Wire.

Bulldogs Postponed

The 1st dog race of the year was slated for last Sunday but was cancelled due to the high heat. Track President Phil Ziegler told ESN the Bulldogs have tentatively been re-scheduled for Saturday, June 28. But if heat is again an issue, they will shift to Friday night, June 27 where temperatures would be cooler to get the Bulldogs on the track. Ziegler says they will make the call likely by June 23 or 24.

Friday Night T-Shirts

If you missed the chance at getting a Fab Friday T-Shirt that will get you free admission for all Friday nights you can still get one. The T-Shirts are for sale in the gift shop located on Track level. Purchase a Fab Friday T-Shirt then wear it on Friday nights and get in for free.

From the Saddle

Last week in the Jockey’s race Manny Americano made a big move and is now just 1 win behind Kevin Krigger in the Jockey standings. Americano 6 races including 4 on Sunday. Americano has now won a race on 9 consecutive days. Krigger picked up 4 wins including a double on Sunday so between Kevin and Manny they won 75% of the races on Sunday. Krigger now has a 10 day streak with at least 1 win.

Doubling up

5 other riders all doubled last weekend collecting a pair of wins over the 3 days of racing. Alex Cruz scored a double on Friday night. The 5-time defending riding champ then continued to hit the board but could not get back to the winner’s circle. Silvio Amador doubled on Saturday while Kevin Orozco and Julien Couton also scored 2 wins this past weekend.

David Haldar was the other 2-win rider and ESN had a chance to catch up with Haldar about how he found his way from Ohio all the way to the Pacific NW.

ESN talks with David Haldar

From the Barn

Jorge Rosales led the charge from the barns this week with 3 wins. Rosales tied for 5th with 7 wins as the trainer standings remain tight with 7 trainers between 7-9 wins. There is a tie for the lead at 9 with both Tim McCanna and Howie Gibson getting a win.

Blaine Wright

Blaine Wright snapped a bit of a cold streak to get his 8th win and 2-time training Champ Justin Evans is back in the thick of things with 2 wins and tied Wright for 3rd with each at 8 wins.

Rosales with his 3 wins pulled into a tie with Frank Lucarelli and Isidro Tamayo who both had a win each. I’m not sure with all the claiming going on and expanded barns that anyone is going to be able to run away with the training title. This is going to be fun to watch.

There were several trainers that ran just one horse last week and had either a 100% win rate or 100% top 3 finish. So perfect placing for these conditioners. Those who entered one and won were Shelly Crowe, Michael Lenzini and David Martinez. The others that had one runner that either placed or showed included Mary Pirone, CC Perkinson, Ian Jewell and Howard Belvoir.

From Owner’s Box

Coldboy Stables Beau Mischief

After 14 days of racing no owner has had more than 1 win on a single day. In fact, it wasn’t until the 2nd race on Saturday that any owner had more than 2 total wins when Chad and Josh became the first 3 race winner of 2025. They were joined by Peter Redekop, Sergio Perez and Harris Farms Inc as the only 3-time winners so far.

Owners with their 1st win of the season included Renee Greiner, Amy Hobson, Coldboy Stables, Leeslye Villegas-Morales, Circle T Racing and Victoria Weaver, Julie Hebdon, Gold Coast Racing V, Rage #2939 and Terra Firma Farm, Jon Freston, Justin Evans and Jeff Plotkin and Timothy O’Leary.

Stats that Pop!

Once again, for those that love numbers keep scrolling and you’ll find your Disneyland. Before that, we have broken down some interesting comparisons from last year to this season.

Big Handle

First thing we’re all told is the handle numbers aren’t like they were in the old days with so many different splits with the different providers on-line, tracks these days don’t get to keep as much of the betting total like they used to.

However, regardless of the way current handle is done compared to the old days there is one concept that never changes. More is better. And this season is proving what many were believing this was going to be a big year in the Northwest so far are spot on.

What a difference a year makes

Last year through the first 14 days the handle topped 1-million dollars 3 times with a high of $1,513,601. All 3 million+ days were on days 2, 3 and 5. This year through 14 days it’s the complete opposite, 11 days are 1-million plus and just 3 days, including 2 7-race cards and the Saturday following Mother’s Day which was an 8 race line-up.

Mother’s Day is the 2nd largest handle of the year so far at $1,803,597 just short of the Sunday on Memorial Day weekend of $1,811,545. There are already 5 days with a handle of more than 1.5-million. Last year there was only 4 total days of the handle topping 1.5-million with the highest handle being Longacres Mile Day of 2.3-million.

Here’s the jaw dropping number so far this year, the handle is up 48.74% over last season through 14 days. In 2025 we’re sitting at $18,416,689 and last year, $12,380,583. Last year it took 21 race days to reach where the handle is today.

The average per day handle is 1,315,478 or $160,145 per race in 2025, compared to $884,327 and $112,551 per race last year.

Field size feeds the handle

Of course the unfortunate collapse of Northern California racing has helped the horse population at Emerald along with the overall demise of many tracks over the past 20+ years. But now we’re benefitting and creating a long term stop on the West Coast circuit of Emerald Downs, Santa Anita, Del Mar and Turf Paradise. That’s it folks with a few Oregon Fairs thrown in.

The field size has been dramatic and has created excitement from the bettors locally and all across the nation with limited choices on Saturday and Sunday late afternoon racing and Friday evening.

Last year the average field size for the season was 6.3 horses per start while this year through 14 days it’s 7.2.  Last year through 14 days 690 horses started and this year it’s 827. You may think it’s because there were more races and there have been, 5. Last year there had been 110 races run at this point this year, 115. So, if we deduct the average per race of 7.2 times it by that’s 35 which means there still has been nearly 100 more horses that have started this year over last.

We also keep track of the field size or how many horses in each race. Here are the field sizes for the entire 2024 season and so far for 2025.
Field size   2024     2025
3                        1            0
4                        17          1
5                        71          15
6                       169        29
7                         98        28
8                         44        24
9                         22          4
10                         8          8
11                          3          5
12                          1           1

Several things jump out, last year the number of 4 horse fields was due to the many 5 horse fields that were drawn and just 1 scratch reduced those fields to 4. So far this year there is 1 and that was due to 2 scratches in a 6 horse field.

Speaking of 6 horse fields, that was the dominant field size last year accounting for 39% of the races. This year the 6 horse fields make up 25% of the races.

Already this season there has been more 11 horse fields, nearly doubling last year’s 3 and have matched the same number of 10 horses field for all of last year.

Last year there were a total of 78 races of 8+ fields. So far this year in just 14 days there have been 42 8+ fields or almost half for all of last year.

Field size should continue to go up with a report some of the horses at Santa Anita can’t run at Del Mar and maybe heading north and the 2-year-olds haven’t begun their runs yet. This all bodes well for these numbers to continue if not get even better.

Pay-offs

The bettors have seen a wide range of pay-offs with several that have already eclipsed the high pays from last season. The $2 show has paid over $20 twice with the high $26.42, well more than last year’s $14.26. However, last year’s $2 win of $83.80 is still more than the $67.16 this year as was the $36.62 $2 place last year to this year’s $35.44.

The 50-cent trifecta has already surged well past last year’s $861.27 with a big $1,004.06. The 10-cent superfecta did not quite pass 2024’s with a $2,064.24 pay-out for a dime. Last year the top pay was $2,188.76.

The $1 Daily Double had a huge winner this season as 1 ticket collected $1,794.25 which soared above last year’s top pay of $704,87. All the other vertical bets of Pick 3, 4, 5 and 6 were all larger last season capped by a massive $25,371.01 pick 5.

One huge improvement was going back to the 20-cent Jackpot pick 6. There has been a $5,062.39 winner already and going into Friday night there is an 8k+ carryover. Last year they tried the tradional 50-cent Pick 6 which never picked up traction with the Pick 5 overwhelming the old traditional Pick 6. The bettors will be coming after the Jackpot which will really start picking up the pace as this carryover builds.

A reminder or if you don’t know the Jackpot Pick 6 only pays out in full when there is one winner. Multiple winners split a share of the pot while another percent carries over. Lately there haven’t been many longshots and multiple winners have built the carryover.
