(Auburn, WA) Day 2 of the Muckleshoot Gold Cup Indian Relays is in the books. We will be doing a comprehensive separate story on the full event. Look for it by Monday. In the meantime, fast times and several doubling up in different ways was the story of the day.
The Numbers
Another great crowd on hand Saturday and just a preview to the expected huge crowd for tomorrow. It’s Championship Sunday of the Gold Cup and Father’s Day.
There were 58 runners over the 8 races on Saturday for an average of 7.25 per race. Bettors laid put $904,059 in handle betting $113,007 for the 8 races.
From the Saddle
Alex Cruz was the lone rider to double on Saturday taking the 2nd and 6th races. Cruz moves into 3rd place in the standings all alone with 14 wins.
Meantime, Juan Gutierrez, Frank Alvarado and Kiaman McGregor all won and all three won races on back-to-back days for the first time this season. It was the 3rd win of the year for both Gutierrez and Alvarado and McGregor’s first wins of the season. David Haldar also won on both days and moves into 6th placed in the jockey standings with his 9th victory.
The Streaks
Two streaks were on the line with Kevin Krigger wasting no time to push his winning streak to 12 straight days with at least 1 win. Manny Americano was 1 behind in the streak and in overall wins. It came down to the final race where he left no doubt winning by more than 11 lengths to extend his streak to 11 days in a row and remains 1 behind Krigger in the jockey standings 25-24.
From the Barn
Jockey’s weren’t the only ones to double, Justin Evans bookended wins in the 1st and last races to take his 1st lead in the trainer standings and 1st one to double digits with 11 wins. He’s 2 in front of Tim McCanna, Howie Gibson and Blaine Wright. Just behind them are Frank Lucarelli and Jorge Rosales with 8 and Isidro Tamayo has 7. The top 7 trainers are all within 4 wins of each other.
Friday night Rosie Simkins and Ian Jewell both got their 1st wins of the year and on Saturday they both picked up win #2.
The Betting Window
Let’s start with the Jackpot Pick 6 where there were 2 winning tickets that paid nearly $1,200 which means the carryover i up to $12,912 for Sunday. The other 1k+ pay-off was the first pick 4 which paid $1,013.32.
The early part of the card had the better pay-offs all-around with the 1st 5 races averaging a $12.48 $2 win pay or 5-1. The final 3 races fell to a 6-5 average or $4.53 win pay.
