6/17/25
(Seattle, WA) One night after being shutout by a veteran starter that hasn’t been at his best this season, the Seattle Mariners would hope to avoid the same fate in game two of their three-game series with the Boston Red Sox. While Seattle had multiple opportunities, they couldn’t ever find the big hit against Boston in the opener.
In game two, the veteran starter the Mariners would have to face would be two-time World Series champion, Walker Buehler. The former Dodger has not been sharp so far in 2025 but he would look to pick up where Lucas Giolito left off the night before. Logan Gilbert also pitched well in the opener and he would pass the baton to Bryan Woo who would look to defeat the Red Sox for the second time this season.
Mariners 8, Red Sox 0 (Game Two)
Seattle would leave two on in the 1st before drawing first blood in the bottom of the 2nd. Rowdy Tellez began the inning with a single before shocking the baseball world and stealing his fifth career base. A one-out walk for Ben Williamson put another runner on for Cole Young, who has quietly brought his average back up. Young sent a deep drive to right field that would just hit the top of the wall and stay in the park. Tellez would score, but a perfect relay by Boston cut down Williamson to keep it 1-0 after Young’s third double of the year.
The Mariners continued to make Buehler work in the inning as J.P. Crawford and Julio Rodríguez both walked to load the bases for Cal Raleigh. After one of his worst games of the season, Raleigh was bound to make up for it and he did just that in grand fashion. Raleigh skied a first pitch changeup high and deep to right field and it continued to carry while Roman Anthony could just watch it. A grand slam brought an energy surge to T-Mobile Park as Raleigh rounded the bases with his MLB-leading 27th home run of the season. Just like that things had escalated for the Mariners as they took a 5-0 lead.
Walker Buehler had a better 3rd inning despite a ten-pitch AB ending in a Dominic Canzone double. The bottom of the 4th would see his night come to an end early. Back-to-back singles by Cole Young and J.P. Crawford put a couple runners on for J-Rod. Julio would groundout after Crawford stole second for the first out. Then Cal Raleigh continued to hammer Buehler. This time it would be a hard grounder down the right field line for his 13th double of the season. Young and Crawford scored before Boston went to their bullpen. Zack Kelly couldn’t strand Raleigh, who would steal third to set the Mariners single season stolen base record with his eighth of the year. Jorge Polanco brought him home with a sacrifice fly as the M’s took a commanding 8-0 lead.
Bryan Woo would hit the second batter that he faced in the game and that was it until the 5th. Woo would lose the no-hitter on a leadoff single by Marcelo Mayer. Two batters later, David Hamilton walked to put two men on with just one out. However, Woo would wiggle out of trouble with a huge strikeout of Rob Refsnyder. Ceddanne Rafaela then sent a harmless fly ball to right field that would be caught by Canzone to end the Red Sox first threat of the game.
Dominant would be an understatement for how good Bryan Woo was on Tuesday night. With the big league, Woo could be aggressive in the strike zone and attacked the young Boston lineup. The hit by Mayer would be the only hit allowed by Bryan Woo who finished his outing with a double play and another groundout in the 7th. Woo would go seven scoreless innings of one hit ball with just two walks allowed and six strikeouts. The outing would get Woo back on track after a tough outing in the desert and is arguably his best start of the season
Cal Raleigh would not complete the cycle as he flew out in his last at-bat of the game. He would however record six runs batted in on the day with two more runs scored on his monster night. With the Yankees getting shutout for their third consecutive game, Raleigh retook the MLB lead in home runs, breaking the tie with Aaron Judge and showcasing why he has the second most All-Star votes in the American League.
Casey Legumina rolled through the 8th with a couple of strikeouts and after not pitching for a week, Andrés Muñoz would enter for the 9th in a non-save situation. He did not look rusty at all despite allowing a leadoff single to Nate Eaton. Muñoz would then record back-to-back strikeouts of Abraham Toro and Roman Anthony for two outs. Carlos Narváez would get the ball in play with a grounder to short. J.P. Crawford flipped it to Cole Young at second for the game’s final out. After being shutout the night before, the Mariners came back and gave the Red Sox a dose of their own medicine with an 8-0 victory.

What’s Next
It was a feel good and stressless win for the Seattle Mariners (37-35) on Tuesday night as they locked in a winning homestand with one game to go. Los Angeles would shutout the New York Yankees again on Tuesday while Houston defeated the Athletics 13-3 in a blowout. Texas did not have a good night either as they fell to Kansas City 6-1. Houston remains 4 1/2 games up on the Mariners while the Rangers fall back to six games out. The Angels are still 6 1/2 back while the A’s are 13 games out. Seattle also retook the third Wild Card spot with the win on Tuesday.
Now a big rubber game will take place on Wednesday night as Seattle and Boston wrap up their season series and the three-game series. Seattle holds a 3-2 advantage and the tiebreaker could loom large as the teams are both in the Wild Card race. In the finale, Boston will get to go with their ace in left-hander Garrett Crochet. Crochet (6-4, 2.24 ERA) has dominated this season, only having three bad starts so far in his first year with the Red Sox. One of those starts came against the Mariners in April when he gave up four runs on five hits in five innings with five walks and nine strikeouts.
Seattle will hand the ball to their veteran in Luis Castillo (4-4, 3.29 ERA) for the finale. After a tough start in Anaheim, Castillo bounced back with a strong start against Cleveland where he struck out a season-high seven in six innings of two-run, three-hit ball. First pitch is scheduled for 1:10pm on Wednesday afternoon.
