(Frisco, TX) Australia’s Minjee Lee handled the weather and pressure of a major championship to win her third career major championship at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.
Lee began the week shooting a 3-under 69 before carding an even par 72 in the second round. Lee shot another 3-under 69 in the third round, but her Saturday performance was a bogey-free round to open up a four-shot lead going into Sunday. Last year, Lee had a three-shot lead on the back nine of the U.S. Women’s Open but finished T-9. This year, Lee shot a steady 2-over 74 to finish at 4-under for the week. She controlled the final round, winning by three shots over Auston Kim and Chanettee Wannasaen.
The purse was $12 million, and Lee will pocket $1.8 million. Lee has won the U.S. Women’s Open in 2022 and The Evian Championship in 2021, where she was seven shots back going into the final round and won in a playoff. 10 years ago, as an 18-year-old, Lee won her first LPGA Tour event, by winning the Kingsmill Championship. Lee also won the U.S. Girls Junior in 2012, and the 2013 and 2014 Australian Women’s Amateur titles. Lee’s younger brother is PGA Tour player Min Woo Lee, who won his first PGA Tour event earlier this year. Minjee and Min Woo are the first brother/sister pair to win USGA Junior Championships when Min Woo won the 2016 U.S. Junior Amateur.
The last eight major champions have been different winners, with half of them being first-time major winners. The next major is The Evian Championship from July 10-13 at Evian Resort Golf Club in France. The Women’s Open will be held at Royal Porthcawl in Wales from July 31 to August 3. Lee will have a chance to get her fourth different major championship at the Women’s Open, where she’s finished in the top five three times and top 10 five times.
