Seattle’s Blake Snyder went to The Island Golf Club in Dublin, Ireland, to attempt to qualify for the 153rd Open Championship, held at Royal Portrush in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. It was Regional Qualifying, where 10 spots were up for grabs. Those 10 players advance to Final Qualifying, similar to the U.S. Open’s qualifying procedure.

Snyder shot a 7-over 79, five shots shy of a playoff for the final two spots. Snyder took advantage of the three par 5s, with birdies on two of them. A double bogey on the par-4 5th hole and a triple bogey on the par-4 17th proved to be the difference in his round.

Snyder played his high school golf at Seattle Prep, where he qualified for the State Tournament every year but his freshman year. In college, Snyder started his career at the University of Hawai’i at Hilo, where, as a freshman made it to the NCAA Division II Championships and finished T-44. For his junior and senior years, Snyder transferred to Washington State and was a captain in his senior year. Snyder finished T-4 at the Pac-12 Championships and was an All-Pac-12 honorable mention.

Paul McBride from Ireland won the qualifier with a 3-under 69. McBride is from The Island Golf Club and won the qualifier by just one shot.
