Lakewood’s Andrew Putnam is in prime position to find the winner’s circle on the PGA Tour for the first time since 2018. This week, the PGA Tour makes its annual stop at the Rocket Classic in Detroit, Michigan. The conditions have been favorable for the players to go low, and they have. Putnam is tied with Chris Kirk and Phillip Knowles at 14-under after 36 holes.
Putnam opened up the week with a round of 64, 8-under, but was still two shots back of the leaders. Putnam had a stretch on the front nine, which was his back nine for the round, where he birdied five holes in a row. In the second round, Putnam carded a bogey-free 6-under 66, highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 7th hole.
Putnam has one victory on the PGA Tour, winning the 2018 Barracuda Championship, which is a modified Stableford scoring event. Putnam beat future major champions, J.J. Spaun (2025 U.S. Open) and Shane Lowry (2019 Open Championship).
Putnam is currently 92nd in the FedEx Cup Standings, but is projected to leap up into the top 50 should he win. The top 100 players in the FedEx Cup standings retain their PGA Tour card. The top 70 players in the FedEx Cup Standings make the FedEx Cup playoffs, a three-event postseason that determines the FedEx Cup Champion. The first FedEx Cup Playoff event is the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis, Tennessee. The top 50 players in the FedEx Cup standings after that tournament advance to the BMW Championship. The top 30 players after the BMW Championship play in the TOUR Championship in Atlanta. The top 50 players in the FedEx Cup standings are fully exempt for the next season, including The Players Championship and all eight Signature Events.
Putnam is coming off his best finish at the RBC Canadian Open earlier this month, where he finished T-6. This is the fifth consecutive cut he has made this season. Putnam retained his PGA Tour card last season by playing in the FedEx Fall and finishing 85th in the final FedEx Cup standings.
