(Detroit, MI) Tacoma’s Andrew Putnam held a share of the 36-hole lead going into Saturday, and while he didn’t win the Rocket Classic, Putnam picked up some valuable points for his top 10 finish.
Putnam shot a 64 and 66 to grab a share of the lead, and followed up with a 69 on Saturday and a 70 on Sunday, which put him at 19-under for the tournament. Putnam finished tied for eighth with four other players, including Matt Fitzpatrick and Collin Morikawa. Putnam finished three shots out of a three-man playoff, which South Africa’s Aldrich Potgieter won over Max Greyserman and Chris Kirk.
Putnam climbed up the FedEx Cup standings, going from 92 to 83. The top 70 players in the FedEx Cup standings make the FedEx Cup Playoffs. The field gets trimmed by 20 players in the first two rounds of the playoffs, before the season wraps up with the top 30 players competing at the Tour Championship. The top 100 players in the FedEx Cup standings retain their PGA Tour card. Before, the top 125 players would keep their card, but the PGA Tour has decided to limit the number of cards earned, starting this year.
Putnam will be back in action this week at the John Deere Classic in the Quad Cities at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois. Washington’s Ryan Moore won his fifth and most recent PGA Tour event at the 2016 John Deere Classic.
