(Tacoma, WA) The USGA held a Local Qualifier for the 125th U.S. Amateur Championship at Lake Spanaway Golf Course. The top nine players advance to Final Qualifying. There will be a final qualifier held at Chambers Bay in University Place on July 30. Players who make it through Final Qualifying advance to the 125th U.S. Amateur Championship, held this year at The Olympic Club (Lake Course) in San Francisco, California.
The medalist was Tyler Kalberg from Seattle, who shot a 3-under 67. Kalberg shot a 2-under 33 on the front nine. The highlight of Kalberg’s round was on the 13th hole, a par 5, where he recorded an eagle en route to a 1-under 34 on the back nine. Kalberg was one shot better than seven players, who tied for second at 2-under.
Buckley’s Zachary Miller, Ethel’s Warren Ayers, Bothell’s Walker Lamb, Mill Creek’s Henry Kippenhan, University Place’s James Bordeaux, Argentina’s Guillermo Polo Bodart, and Spokane’s Andrew Von Lossow all made it through to Final Qualifying at 2-under. The highlight of the day came courtesy of Seattle U’s Walker Lamb. Lamb was even for his round, and made a hole-in-one on the par-3 17th hole, to get him to 3-under on the back nine and 2-under for the round. Had Lamb made a par or worse, he might not have advanced through to Final Qualifying.
England’s Alex Lee shot a 1-under, 69 to finish solo ninth and take the final spot from the qualifier. Seattle’s Dalton Conn and Lake Tapps’ Brock Maulding shot even to be the first and second alternates.
The average score was 74.51, with the back nine playing half a stroke easier than the front. The front nine’s average score was 37.52, while the back was 36.99. The hardest and easiest holes on the course were both on the back nine. The hardest was the 15th hole, a 471-yard par 4. The average score was 4.55, and there were only three birdies and 38 bogeys or worse. The easiest hole was the 13th, a 524-yard par 5 that saw an average score of 4.79. There were four eagles, 30 birdies, and only 14 bogeys or worse.
