(Creswell, OR) The USGA held a Local Qualifier for the 125th U.S. Amateur Championship at Emerald Valley Golf Club. The top 11 players advance to Final Qualifying. There will be a final qualifier held at Chambers Bay in University Place on July 30. Players who make it through Final Qualifying advance to the 125th U.S. Amateur Championship, held this year at The Olympic Club (Lake Course) in San Francisco, California.
The co-medalists were Jeffrey Kwak from La Mirada, California, and Wyatt Brook from Canada. The pair shot 4-under, 68s, with Brook going bogey-free while Kwak had 2-under 34s on the front and back nines. Kwak wrapped up his sophomore year at the University of Oregon this year. Kwak played his freshman year at Santa Clara University. Brook finished fourth at the British Columbia Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship last month, after winning the title last year.
Jack Dukeminier from Portland, Oregon, and Taylor Bromley from Oakdale, California, tied for third at 3-under. Tied for fifth were Nahum Mendoza from Chula Vista, California, and Jack Jerge from Pleasant Hill, California, at 2-under. Firing a 1-under 71 was Quinn Hefele from Portland, Oregon, Aston Lim from Union City, California, and Robbie Ziegler from Tualatin, Oregon, to tie for seventh. Spokane’s Benjamin Mulder and Vancouver’s Brett Johnson tied for 10th at even to secure the final two spots. Aaron Buck from Tualatin, Oregon, and Samuel Ayotte from Corvallis, Oregon, are the two alternates, also shooting an even par 72.
The back nine played significantly harder than the front nine. The back nine saw an average score of 38.93 while the front nine had an average score of 37.80. Four of the five hardest holes, including the three hardest holes, were all on the back nine. The hardest hole was the 16th hole, a 440-yard par 4 with an average score of 4.64. The 16th surrendered only one birdie, while there were 42 pars, 47 bogeys, eight double bogeys or worse. The easiest hole on the course was the seventh hole, a 558-yard par 5. The seventh had an average score of 4.92, with 22 birdies and only 14 bogeys.
