(Johns Creek, GA) Bellevue’s Nicole Tang and Everett’s Chanyoung Park are competing in the 76th U.S. Girls Junior Championship this week. It is held at the Atlanta Athletic Club (Riverside Course), where the 1990 U.S. Women’s Open and stroke play portion of the 2014 U.S. Amateur occurred. The Highlands Course has seen a U.S. Open and two PGA Championships. The property is historic, as Bobby Jones played lots of golf at AAC, and the club is located at 1930 (the year Jones won the Grand Slam) Bobby Jones Drive. John Heisman, who the Heisman Trophy is named after, was the Athletic Director at the club while coaching at Georgia Tech.

Tang shot a 6-over 77 in the first round. She started with a 38, going 3-over on the front nine, and finished with a 3-over 39 on the back. Tang birdied the 3rd and 10th holes. Tang attends Bellevue High School and is committed to playing college golf at Washington State. Tang recently won the Washington State Junior Amateur by seven shots, with all three of her rounds being in the 60s.

Park also shot 77, with a 2-over 37 on the front and a 4-over 40 on the back. Park tees off at 11:09 AM tomorrow while Tang tees off at 5:38 AM. Park goes to Jackson High School, and as a freshman, won the 4A State Championship by four shots. Last year, Park took second place by just one shot.

Ranka Nakayama from Japan is the first-round leader with a 5-under round of 66. Nakayama shot a pair of 33s to take the solo lead by one stroke. The semifinals will be streamed on Peacock from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM on Friday and on tape delay on Golf Channel at 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. On Saturday, Peacock will air the Championship Match from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM with the tape delay re-air on Golf Channel from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
