(Sunriver, OR) The 123rd PNGA Men’s Amateur Championship wrapped up its first round of action. The first two days are stroke play, and the field will be cut to 64 players for match play to determine the champion. Some past champions of this tournament include Tiger Woods, Ben Crane, Carl Yuan, Zac Blair, and others.

This year, the title will take place at Sunriver Resort. The first round, Round of 32, Round of 16, and half of the 36-hole Championship Match will be at the Woodlands Course, while the second round, Round of 64, Quarterfinals, Semifinals, and the other half of the 36-hole Championship Match will be at the Meadows Course. Thursday begins match play with the Round of 64. The Round of 32 and Round of 16 will be on Friday. Saturday will see the Quarterfinals and Semifinals, and Sunday will be the 36-hole Championship Match.

At the top of the leaderboard are Taylor Lansford from Post Falls, Idaho, and Jonas Kim from Puyallup. The pair both shot 5-under 67s to hold a one-shot advantage over the field. Lansford shot 32 on the front nine with five birdies and a bogey. Kim only recorded one bogey in his round with six birdies for his first 18 holes.

Washougal’s Truman Fletcher is in solo third at 4-under after a 68 in the first round. There are eight players tied for fourth at 3-under and two players tied for 12th at 2-under. 23 players had rounds under par. The defending champ, Sam Renner from Bend, Oregon, shot an even par 72 in defense of his title. Renner just completed his junior year at Washington State and is looking to be the first player since Jim McLean in 1971 and 1972 to win back-to-back PNGA Men’s Amateur Championships.

The cut line will produce the most drama in the second round tomorrow. There’s a giant log jam at 1-over, with 21 players tied for 39th. There are 11 players tied for 60th at 2-over, with 10 players tied for 71st at 3-over. Almost 30% of the field is either one shot below the cut line, at the cut line, or one shot back of the cut line as it stands.
