(Sunriver, OR) The first day of match play is over as the Round of 64 is complete. Today, the action stayed at the Meadows Course at Sunriver Resort, and tomorrow the field heads back to the Woodlands Course for the Round of 32 and Round of 16.
There was a lot of action on the course today, and it started with the medalist Dylan Burcham, who won his match 6 & 5. Olympia’s Eli McNelly won in 19 holes over AJ Fitzgerald. Kirkland’s Brock Olson won 1 Up over Stanwood’s Conrad Chisman by taking the 17th hole. That match was back and forth all day as neither player held more than a 1 Up lead. Vancouver’s Brett Johnson won his match over Carter Williams 1 Up. Bothell’s Walker Lamb won 3 & 1 and Shoreline’s Benjamin Borgida won 5 & 4.
Some other highlights from the day included Issaquah’s Calvin Cakarnis winning 1 Up. Centralia’s Von Wasson won three of the last four holes to go from 1 Down to 2 Up to win his match. Bellingham’s Jonathan Larson won 3 & 2 and Quincy’s Paul Mitzel won 4 & 3 in their matches. Tacoma’s Jeff Seong advanced with a 5 & 3 win. Mill Creek’s Jacob Kang needed 21 holes to defeat Gig Harbor’s Theodore Snyder.
The longest match of the day was a 24 hole match between Taylor Lansford from Post Falls, Idaho, and Kirkland’s Ryder Odem. Odem was 3 Up on the front nine, but Lansford rallied to tie the match on the 13th hole. Odem won the 15th and 16th holes to take a 2 Up lead. Lansford won both the 17th and 18th holes to for a playoff and won on the 6th playoff hole. Four matches went into a playoff in the Round of 64, and three of them required at least 20 holes.
