(Blaine, WA) The 16th Washington Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship teed off from Semiahmoo Golf & Country Club. The field consists of 120 players, and after 36 holes, the field will be cut to the low 60 players and ties. The Championship is open to male amateur golfers who are 25 years old as of today and have a handicap of 9.9 or less. The winner gets a lifetime exemption into the Washington Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship, the 2026 Washington Champion of Champions, the 2026 Washington Men’s Amateur Championship, and the 2026 Pacific Northwest Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship. Last year, Jacob Rohde from Everett shot a bogey-free 67 to come from behind and win the championship.

Bellingham’s Jonathan Larson shot a 6-under 66 to take the first-round lead by one stroke. Larson shot a 2-under 34 on the front nine, rattled off five consecutive birdies on the back nine, and had just one bogey to set the pace at the top of the leaderboard. Kenmore’s Colten Kleis sits in second place after a 5-under 67. Kleis went out with a 4-under 32 on the front and came in with a 1-under 35 on the back nine. Seattle’s Johnny Carey and Surrey, British Columbia, Canada’s David Gomes are tied for third at 2-under. Blaine’s Jamie Meade is in solo fifth place at 1-under.

Seattle’s Ben Minyard, Hayden Lake, Idaho’s Reid Hatley, Bothell’s Jordan Miller, and Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada’s Neil MacLeod all shot even par 72s and are tied for sixth. Tied for tenth is Tsawwassen, British Columbia’s Josh Baker, Tacoma’s Greg Gildea, Snohomish’s Daniel McGee, Bellingham’s Ethan Potts, and Seattle’s Sandy Vaughan, all at 1-over.

The 6,800-yard course flexed its muscles on the field today, with a scoring average of 80.88. The easiest and hardest holes on the course were back-to-back holes on the back nine. The easiest hole was the 13th hole, a 574-yard par 5. The hole saw a scoring average of 5.16, with three eagles, 20 birdies, 19 bogeys, and 12 doubles or worse. The four easiest holes on the course today were the four par 5s. The hardest hole was the 14th hole, a 415-yard par 4. The hole saw a whopping scoring average of 4.95, with only seven birdies, 36 bogeys, and 31 double bogeys or worse. The 4th hole wasn’t a bargain either. The 407-yard par 4 saw an average score of 4.91 and surrendered only three birdies while seeing 76 bogeys or worse.
