(Dallas, TX) Sammamish’s Zach Huang is competing this week at the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship at Trinity Forest Golf Club. There are 264 players in the field this week, with the first two rounds being stroke play. The field will be cut to 64 players for match play, which begins on Wednesday. The championship match is a 36-hole match on Saturday.
To be eligible for the event, players must have a handicap index that doesn’t exceed 2.4 and not turn 19 years old by July 26, 2025, the day of the championship match. The 2027 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship comes to Washington, when Chambers Bay in University Place will host the best junior male golfers in the country.
The semifinals and the championship match will be available to watch. The semifinals will be on Peacock from 12 PM to 2 PM and on the Golf Channel on tape delay from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM. On Saturday, the championship match will be on the Golf Channel from Noon to 2 PM.
Huang played at Trinity Forest Golf Club for his first round, where he carded a 3-over round of 74. Huang got off to a great start with a birdie on the 593-yard par 5 2nd hole, before a bogey on the 9th gave him an even par 36. Huang had a birdie on the 14th hole as part of a 3-over 38. Tomorrow, he will play at the Brook Hollow Golf Club, which is co-hosting the stroke play portion of the championship.
Alameda, California’s Kailer Stone and China’s Qiyou Wu are tied at the top of the leaderboard with each player shooting 5-under. Jacksonville Beach, Florida’s Miles Russell, who has made three starts on the PGA Tour as a 16-year-old, is one shot off the pace a 4-under. Tiger Woods, a three-time winner of this championship, was on the course supporting his son, Charlie, who shot 11-over in the first round. Last year’s winner, Trevor Gutschewski, is only two shots back of the lead after carding a round of 3-under.
