(Bandon, OR) The first round of stroke play has concluded from Bandon Dunes Golf Resort (Bandon Dunes) at the 125th U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship. The top 64 players advance to match play, and if there’s a tie for the 64th spot, there will be a hole-by-hole playoff tomorrow after the second round.

There’s a three-way tie for the lead after 18 holes of action. Rianne Malixi, the defending champion, Julia Misemer, and Cindy Hsu all shot four-under 68s. Julia Misemer is playing in her 10th USGA tournament and said that she’s feeling more confident every year.

Rianne Malixi had a wild week of travel just to get here. She is from the Philippines, and applied for a student visa to play this week. She got a notification six hours before her scheduled flight to the U.S. that her passport and visa were ready. Malixi got there on Saturday and played nine holes, played 18 holes yesterday, and now shares the lead. Malixi also said she watched videos of the 2020 U.S. Amateur and 2022 U.S. Junior Amateur, both held at Bandon Dunes, to help her prepare for the week.

Asterisk Talley, last year’s runner-up, Anna Davis, Lauren Olivares, and Scarlett Schremmer are all one shot off the lead in a tie for fourth. 13 players are tied for eighth at two-under par to round out the top 10.

Washington’s Grace Lee shot a two-over 74 in today’s round. Lee shot a one-under 35 on the front nine but carded a three-over 39 on the back. Lee is in a tie for 74th, one shot back of what would be a playoff for the final spots in match play. There are 22 players tied for 52nd at one-over par. Lee tees off tomorrow at 8:33 AM and will be starting on the 10th hole.

The wind was a factor in play this afternoon and will be in play tomorrow also. Players were battling winds that gusted around 20 MPH, and tomorrow the winds will be at similar speeds.
