(Bandon, OR) Stroke play has wrapped up at the 125th U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship. Most of the field has been set for match play, which starts tomorrow with the Round of 64, as there will be a playoff tomorrow morning to settle the final six spots.
The two players who squared off in the championship match a year ago are the co-medalists this year. Rianne Malixi and Asterisk Talley shot nine-under par for their two rounds to take the top spot after stroke play. Malixi shot a five-under 67 while Talley shot a bogey-free 66 today. It’s the first time since 1976 when Beth Daniel was the defending champion and the next year was the medalist.
Talley said after her round today when asked about shifting her focus to match play, “The best thing about match play is you are always playing at the same time as your opponent. You’re not playing the whole field, you are only playing one person. It’s just easy when you are playing the same hole at the same time.”
Eila Galitsky also shot a bogey-free round of 66 to take solo third place at eight-under after stroke play. The round of the day went to Canada’s Vanessa Borovilos, who shot a nine-under 63. She set the record for the lowest 18-hole round in the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship.
When Borovilos was asked about her record setting round, she replied, “I think it is my record personally, but it’s just another day. We have a couple more matches to go this week, so not thinking too much of it.” Borovilos tied for fourth with Lyla Louderbaugh and Catherine Rao at seven-under par.
Gianna Clemente, Cindy Hsu, and Jazy Roberts, who won the PNGA Women’s Amateur Championship last month, tied for seventh at six-under par. Six players tied for 10th at five-under par to round out the top 10.
There will be a playoff tomorrow with only six spots up for grabs and 15 players battling for the last spots in match play. The 15 players tied for 59th at one-over par in the two rounds of stroke play. The playoff will begin on the 345-yard par 4 10th hole.
