8/10/2025

(Auburn, Wa) The weekend prior to Mile week wrapped up under warm temperatures and blue skies. 9 races were on the card. Manny Americano continues to chip away at Kevin Krigger’s lead in the jockey race. Meantime, Jorge Rosales has surged to the lead in the trainer’s race.

The Numbers

There were 9 races and 69 starters for an average of 7.7 per race. This had been the first 3-day without a million dollar handle going into sunday. It would not be the 1st 3-day week without a Million+ handle as the bettors pushed $1,514,291 through the betting windows or $168,255 per race.

New Leader in the Trainer’s Race

Trainer Jorge Rosales has been busy at the claim window all season and he has had more starts than any other trainer and the wins are really starting to stack up and had 2 more wins on Sunday. It was the second day in a row Rosales doubled and finished the week with 4 wins. This pushes his total to 26 wins and 2 in front of Justin Evans’ 24, who was shut out over the weekend.

Rosales means business as he has started 141 runners this season nearly double of the 76 Evans has run. Only 2 other trainers have started more than 100, Frank Lucarelli with 110 and Blaine Wright at 103. Wright did get a win this weekend and is 3rd with 22 wins. Rosales, Evans and Wright are the only trainers with 20 or more wins. Lucarelli and Tim McCanna are at 19. McCanna got his 19th win in the 2nd race on Sunday.

Here are the current standings with a minimum of 10 wins:
1 Jorge Rosales 26
2 Justin Evans 24
3 Blaine Wright 22
4 Frank Lucarelli 19
4 Tim McCanna 19
6 Howie Gibson 17
7 Tom Wenzel 15
8 Isidro Tamyao 11

Other trainers with wins on Sunday

Kevin Orozco and Kay Cooper

Plenty of veteran conditioners picked up wins on Sunday. Kay Cooper finished 1st and 2nd in the maiden filly and mare race in the 5th in dominating fashion. Fine By Me beat stablemate Empirical by 2 lengths who was 2 lengths in front of 3rd place Pearl Blue.

Vince Gibson continues to break out of his early season 2nd-itis with his 2nd win of the weekend in the 6th with Pineapple Express. This was Gibson’s 7th win of the year. Jose Puentes also got #7 with longshot Fast Chaz on Sunday, Sergio Perez earned win #6 and Jose Navarro won his 3rd race of the season in the finale.

One trainer got his 1st win at Emerald Downs in the feature race. Isauro Guillen has only 16 starts in his career as he began his training career last winter at Pleasanton. He picked up 3 wins during that run, 2 were from Sir Greyson including his 1st career win in start #4. His 3rd win at Pleasanton came from Max’s Maxine. Sir Greyson then handed Guillen his 1st Emerald win in his 5th start in Auburn on Sunday. Unfortunately for Guillen, Justin Evans saw the value in Sir Greyson and claimed him for $8,000.

Krigger still leading Jockey’s race, Americano closing the gap

Manny Americano wrapped up his best week for quite some time with 7 wins for the week and gained half of the 10 win deficit he was facing beginning the week to Kevin Krigger. Krigger ended up with 2 wins but is still in control with just 12 racing days left in the 2025 season.

Going into Longacres Mile weerkend Krigger leads Americano 59-54.

Race for 3rd place heating up

The 5 time defending jockey champ, Alex Cruz has not had the year he’s used to having at Emerald Downs and is in 3rd place with 27 wins. Silvio Amador and Kevin Orozco are both making a push for that 3rd spot. Amador and Orozco both tallied 3 wins each this weekend. Amador now has 25 wins just 2 behind Cruz and Orozco sits at 24. Cruz and Orozco will have an advantage going into the final 12 days. Amador had a 4th unofficial win this past weekend but was taken down in a DQ. Amador also got a 2 day suspension set to be served on the 22nd and 23rd so he has 10 days left to ride.

Castellanos heating up at the right time

Adrian Castellanos had a solid week with 3 wins and all at prices. Castellanos ended the week going 3-1-4-2 from 17 starts. This moves him into a tie for 8th place and he’s got some momentum built up heading for the homestretch of the season.

Longacres Mile Week

This coming weekend is a huge one for racing in the Northwest. On Saturday, the Washington State Thoroughbred Hall of Fame will welcome 4 new inductees including trainer Mark Glatt, owner Paskey Dedomenico, Breeders Ron and Nina Hagen and Longacres Mile Champion Wasserman.

When racing gets underway on Saturday two quarterhorse Stakes races will be contested in races 1 and 2. Qualifiers battled earlier this season to get into these races. Race 1 is the John Deere Emerald Downs Juvenile Challenge with 10 starters set to contest the 350 yards for the $30,000 purse.

Race 2 is the AQHA Emerald Downs Championship Challenge with a $40,000 purse. 10 runners are set to break from the starting gates going 400 yards.

Super Stakes Sunday #3 Longacres Mile Day!

The 3rd scheduled big stakes Sunday with 6 stakes races set to be contested will go on Sunday. The card will be drawn on Wednesday with a special news conference and public draw for the Mile at emerald Downs. The other 5 races will be the Emerald Distaff, Muckleshoot Derby, the Washington Oaks and the WTBOA Lads and Lassies Stakes. We’ll have a full report after the draw on Wednesday.

The Betting Window

The big number of the day on Sunday was 1. 1 favorite won on Sunday leaving open the chance to win some good money. The largest $2 bet of the day was 23-1 Fast Chaz paying $49.28. 5 race winners paid more than  $10 and the average $2 win returned $16.96 or nearly 7.5-1.

The Pick 3 paid an astounding average of $330.77 for the day. There were 4 pays in triple digits, the 1st one in the 3rd race returned $871, the 4th race paid $358, in the 8th race $235 and the final pick 3 was good for $690. The Daily Doubles were good as well with 2 of them more than $100. The races 1 thru 4 pick 4 returned $4,500 and the final pick 4 was good for more than $1,300.

The Pick 5 was actually a bit disappointing paying $3,700 considering in that sequence was 23-1 Fast Chaz and 7-1 Sir Greyson. There were some deep tickets with likely a heavy reliance on the lone favorite winning in that series, 6-5 Pinapple Express.

The Pick 6 paid 5 correct of $624 leaving $4,894 to carryover to next Friday.
