(San Francisco, CA) The 125th U.S. Amateur is underway from The Olympic Club. The stroke play portion of the championship has wrapped up as a pair of players from Washington teed it up from the famed course this week.
Bellevue’s Max Herendeen secured his spot in match play. He opened the championship with a one-under 69 and fired a second round three-over 73, finishing at two-over and in a tie for 33rd. Herendeen is the 47th seed and will go up against Arni Sveinsson from Iceland, and they tee off at 10:20 AM.
Buckley’s Zachary Miller is in a 20 for 17 player playoff to advance to match play. In the first round, Miller shot an even par 70 and in the second round, he carded a three-over 73 to finish at three-over for the two rounds. Miller tees off at 7:30 AM in the playoff.
Dallas, Texas’s Preston Stout was the medalist, with a two-day total of eight-under. Stout shot three-under in the first round and went low with a five-under round of 65 in the second round.
Other notable players advancing are Luke Poulter, the son of English golfer Ian. Jackson Koivun, who’s made six starts on the PGA Tour this year, made five cuts and recorded a pair of top 10 finishes. John Daly II, the son of two-time major champion John Daly is the 26th seed. Miles Russell is a 16-year old who already has made professional starts, including a T-20 finish at the LECOM Suncoast Classic on the Korn Ferry Tour last year.
