(Auburn, WA) The Longacres Mile continues to be the showcase race of the Northwest. Some of the biggest trainers, owners and jockeys have all wanted to be part of this historical race.

2025 is no different and it’s from a well known celebrity television chef who is returning home with the 2nd favorite on the morning line in the 90th running of the Longacres Mile.

Brian Malarkey grew up in the horse business with his father, Mike, owned horses and his mom Leslie was a trainer and they ran mostly at Portland Meadows. Malarkey’s uncle is the only track photographer Emerald Downs’ has ever known, Reid Palmer. Erin Palmer is Reed’s daughter and long time assistant and Malarkey’s cousin.

Malarkey worked at Emerald Downs during the 1st couple of seasons and was the lead photographer for the tracks only winter season that ran just after the inaugural 1996 season. He later worked several seasons at Canterbury Park in Minnesota for his uncle.

Malarkey is well known on the Food Network with appearances on multiple shows from Guy’s Grocery Games to Chopped to his own show, Cutthroat Kitchen; Knives Out.

Malarkey is part-owner of Arrowthegreat, the 5-2 2nd favorite in the Longacres Mile. Arrowthegreat will break from the 1 hole and will have Manny Americano in the saddle.

Here’s our conversation with Malarkey who is not shy and more than happy to talk about a wide range of topics.

Arrowthegreat ships in from Del Mar and is the 2nd choice at 5-2. Arrowthegreat specializes in the 1 mile distance with a 3-3-1 lifetime record the one trip around from 7 starts. His lifetime record  is 3-6-1 from 17 races so most of his success is at the distance. He will break from the 1 post.

Manny Americano gets the ride for trainer Dan Blacker and owners Double L Racing Radley Equine Inc. The 5-year-old gelding has earned $210,940.

Malarkey is excited to be here and hopes he will get his picture taken and nothing more satisfying would be having their silks painted on the paddock statue.

There will be 11 races on the Champions Day card with the final 6 all stakes races. The Longacres Mile is the 9th race and set to be run at 5:53.
