(Williamsport, PA) Bonney Lake-Sumner Little League has avoided elimination by knocking out the New England squad. In their first game, Bonney Lake-Sumner fell 5-3 to Nevada, representing the Mountain region. That loss sent Bonney Lake-Sumner, representing the Northwest region, to a string of elimination games. They must win four games in a row to make the U.S. Championship Game and five in a row to compete for the Little League World Series title. Their first game on the road to redemption came against Massachusetts, representing the New England region. New England lost their first game 13-0 to Southeast and then knocked out Southwest 7-3 to avoid elimination itself.
In the elimination game, Bonney Lake-Sumner jumped out to a 1-0 lead, thanks to Colton Audette driving in Mason Woods in the bottom of the first. Massachusetts scored a pair of runs in the top of the second inning to go up 2-1. In the bottom of the second, Cole Sehlin drove in Asher Monson to tie the game with two outs. Atley Eager scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-2 on the next at-bat. In the fifth inning, Massachusetts got runners on second and third with only one out. Sawyer Breed got a strikeout to get the second out, but New England tried to steal home after Breed received the ball from his catcher, Mason Woods. With a heads-up play, Breed saw the runner dashing for home, fired it to Woods, who dropped the tag down in time for the third out and ending a dangerous chance for New England to tie or take the lead. Andrew Madsen closed things out on the mound for Bonney Lake-Sumner as they won 3-2 to keep their tournament going.
Washington will now play the loser of the Metro vs Midwest game on Tuesday at 4 PM. They still need three more wins of elimination games to get to next Saturday’s U.S. Championship Game. The team will also enjoy a special game between the New York Mets and the Seattle Mariners, as the two teams will play tonight at Journey Bank Ballpark in Williamsport.
