(Auburn, Wa) Championship Sunday feastured 6 Stakes races highlighted by the 90th running of the Longacres Mile. Coming into the day the analysis was the heavy favorites would all be difficult to beat and lots of favorites wouold likely rule the day. The big bets would all be hit with minimal pay-outs and the pick 6 would carryover because of multiple winners. Even if there was an upset maybe two, the likely singles or down to 2 runners would make up up for any 1 time surprise.
What wasn’t counted on was a carryover pot in the Pick 6 because it took only 4 to get paid and no one even had 5 of 6 winners let alone all 6. Or that with a 3.3 million dollar handle that there pick 5 would carryover because no one had all 5 winners on their tickets. Or only 2 winners in the final pick 4 and paid 27k.
It was a tough day for the favorites and we have the whole day covered for you in this piece.
Before we get started we’d like to let you know to keep an eye out for our Hall of Fame coverage coming later the week.
Let’s get to this crazy Championship Sunday!
The Numbers
Championship Sunday fielded 80 runners for the 11 races for a 7.3 starter average per race. The bettors showed up with the highest handle in Emerald Downs history of $3,305,806. This was the 2nd highest in Emerald Downs history and second in State history missing the top handle by just $33,281. The top handle was September 21, 1992, the final day of Longacres with $3,339,087 wagered.
Sunday’s handle edged out the $3,250,015 bet on Longacres Mile Day in 2011. That day Awesome Gem defeated Noosa Beach in the Longacres Mile and the race itself handled a state record of more than 900k.
Sunday’s average handle per race was $300,528.
Jockey, Trainer Races
Normally in these re-caps we update how the race for the jockey and trainer titles are shaping up. But with so much already to report on in this piece we will do a follow up setting the stage for the last 9 days of racing in another story hopefully later this week.
In the 5th race, just prior to the 1st Stakes race a spill occurred at the top of the stretch where one horse clipped heels with another who then collided with another horse sending two riders to the ground. Jockey Alex Cruz took the worst of it but looks to have avoided a really serious injury. Cruz was taken to a local hospital where he was evaluated for a knee injury and later released.
Julien Couton was the other to hit the ground. Couton was able to get up and jog back to the jockey’s room. Both had several mounts in Stakes races with Couton set to ride morning line favorite Slew’s Tiz Whiz in the Longacres Mile. Cruz had 4 mounts but was not able to ride any of his stakes mounts.
The two involved horses, I’m Noble and San Andres avoided serious injury and were back in their barns following the race.
Alex Cruz posted this on Facebook on Monday and is great news…
“I’m want to Thank everyone for your support..I have been resting can’t answer everybody, too many people… I’m fine nothing broken or serious just sore…again thanks everybody.”
Dead-Heat
The day began with a little something for everyone with the first Dead Heat for a win of the year. Jockey Allyssa Morales just won her 1st race of the year in the final race on Saturday. She was looking for back-to-back wins with her mount on Betty Ryano in the 1st on Mile day. To do so she would need to run down froint speed Cantputapriceonfun with Manny Americano aboard and they would do so right on the wire for the tie.
The duo hit the wire together and were just a neck away from a triple dead heat as Danzing Zella with Chel-c Bailey was also closing fast to just miss.
The Betting Window
The Betting Window was crazy on Mile Day and there were some big prices to take in. First, the 50-cent pick 5 did not get hit which is amazing with 3.3 million being bet. 33-1 Chatty Leroybrown won the Oaks in the final race of the day and no one had all 5 winners on one ticket which meant a consolation of $699.50 was paid to those with 4 winners. The carryover to next Friday is a massive $78,841.
The Pick 6 also had winners with just 4 correct and the carryover into Friday is $12,382. These carryovers should propel the Friday night handle to a big number. The card has been drawn already and Friday night will be a 9 race card starting to make up for the 7 races missed last week when Friday’s card was cancelled over concerns of potential heavy rains.
There have been 77 horses entered for Friday night’s cardor 8.6 per race if they all go to the post. The number of horses set to go in the pick 6 is 54 and for the pick 5 it’s 45 starters or 9 per race. There will be big money on the line and Emerald Downs has put together a challenging card to say the least.
The final pick 4 was hit twice with each winning ticket paying $27,875.31. The Super High 5 had a 10k carryover and the pool got bet hard to more than $72,000 and it was hit several times despite the 33-1 winner and returned $16,584.59. The 50-cent trifecta paid over $3,000, the pick 3 was more than $2,300 and the superfecta was 12-grand on the $1 bet, $1,200+ for the dime wager.
There is so much to cover on just the bets this past weekend, if I can find the time I’ll write a piece just in the big pays, but in the meantime all the pays are listed with each race re-cap below.
Our Race Coverage begins with the 90th running of the Longacres Mile followed by the other 5 Stakes races as they were run. The first five races will follow our Stakes Stories.
9th Race the 90th Longacres Mile Purse $125,000
By Vince Bruun
Under a rail-skimming ride by Manuel Americano, California invader Arrowthegreat powered to a 2 ¼-length victory over Clovisconnection in Sunday’s 90th running of the $125,000 Longacres Mile at Emerald Downs.
The 3-to-2 betting favorite, Arrowthgreat covered the mile in 1:34.41 under 119 lbs., returning $5.08 to win as the betting favorite. Southern California-based Dan Blacker is the winning trainer for an ownership syndicate of Radley Equine, John Cavalli, Jim Crews, Rick Gold, Allan Harris Lerch, Brian Malarkey, Dave Odmark, and Double L Racing.
Bettors, meanwhile, wagered an Emerald Downs’ single day record of $3,305,806 on the 11-race card, just missing the state record of $3,339,087, set Sept. 21, 1992, at Longacres.
In fourth at the quarter-pole, some five lengths behind the trio of Masen, Clovisconnection, and What a Dude, Arrowthegreat rallied furiously inside to collar Clovisconnetion in the final sixteenth and won going away.
For Americano, riding champion at Turf Paradise and currently second at Emerald Downs, the Mile marks his biggest win to date and a perfect way to begin his life as a full-fledged journeyman jockey. Including a six-length victory last February at Turf Paradise, Americano is now 2 for 2 on Arrowthegreat.
“Thank you to Manny for riding him so well,” Blacker said. “The ownership is a great group of people spearheaded by Brian. We bought this horse as a yearling, my business partner Craig Rounsefell picked him out, and just to be here all these years later is rewarding.”
A 5-year-old Kentucky-bred by Arrogate, Arrowthegreat improved to 4-6-1 in 17 starts with career earnings of $279,690, including $68,750 for Sunday’s victory. His four career wins are all at a mile on dirt, not including another recent mile win from which he was disqualified and placed second for interference.
Clovisconnection, ridden by Kevin Krigger at 124 lbs, finished a gutsy second—the second straight Longacres Mile runner-up finish for the Blaine Wright trainee. Racing just off the pace set by Masen—:23.19, :46.39, 1:10—Clovisconnection forged a lead past midstretch before yielding to Arrowthgreat in deep stretch. Owned and bred by William Hedrick, Clovisconnection earned $25,000 and is 12-4-1 in 22 starts with earnings of $518,300.
ESN talked with jockey Kevin Krigger who said, “the pace setter started to tire and lugged out kind of taking my path and opened the rail wide open for the winner. My horse did respond when we saw him but by then it was too late.” “My horse ran hard and another great effort by him. We just didn’t have it go our way.”
Bearings, a 30 to 1 longshot ridden by Kevin Orozco at 120 lbs., closed from last place to finish third, three-quarters of a length back of Clovisconnection. Rounding out the full order of finish were Moneyshot, What a Dude, Masen, Slew’s Tiz Whiz, Fifty Cinco, Apprehend, and Seas of Normandy.
Trainer Justin Evans was very pleased with the run from Bearings who is a deep closer and had a change of riders at the last second. Alex Cruz was supposed to ride but after getting hurt in the 5th he had to take off. Evans, who hasn’t used Kevin Orozco much got him to jump on. Evans said, “I was really pleased with how Kevin rode him. Getting throwning in to ride in a race like this is really tough so coming out with 3rd I’m really pleased and thank Kevin for the job he did.”
The morning line favorite, Slew’s Tiz Whiz just didn’t have his patented kick in this one and is the first time in 4 straight Longacres Mile starts he didn’t finish 1st, 2nd or 3rd. Slew was a little closer to the front than usual and jockey Julien Couton may have been concerned about the pace being too slow and when it came time to ask for that patented kick the tank was empty in this one.
46-1 Moneyshot and Frank Alvarado made nice run to get up for 4th and just missed 3rd place by a head to the faster closing Bearings. One other runner looked like he might be one of those upsets that were coming in all over the place and that was 7-1 What A Dude with Juan Gutierrez. What A Dude had run the fastest mile time of the season and was sitting just off the front speed in 3rd place all the way to the top of the stretch where Gutierrez and Dude made a move and was at the front with Masen but inside the 1/8 pole flattened out to finish 5th.
Arrowthegreat ran the 1-mile in a quick 1:34.41, the fastest mile time since 2020’s Anothertwistafate went 1:34.10. The all-time Mile record which is also a state record was by Point Piper in 2016 with a time of 1:32.90.

6th Race 44th WTBOA Lassies Stakes Purse $50,000
In the opening stakes race of the 6 in a row, 6 starters lined up to go 6 1/2-furlongs in the Lassies Stakes. Trainer Frank Lucarelli had have the field with 3 entries. However, it didn’t matter how many you had in the race if 1-2 favorite Falling Leaves took another step forward off her 1st two races both wins in an impressive maiden win and easily taking the Angie C Stakes in July.
Carlos Montalvo was up on the Tom Wenzel trained and George Todaro owned odds-on choice and as expected went straight to the lead quickly opening quickly by 3 lengths. Falling Leaves blazed away going 21.40 and 44.00 flat for the half mile.
Meantime, 7-2 second choice, Bewitching Joy with Isaias Enriquez broke last and he patiently got the young filly back into the race, at least with the other 4 trailing the speedster.
The question was would the quick early times wear on Falling Leaves as she attempted her longest race yet? The answer was clear when just outside the quarter pole Enriquez pushed go and Bewitching Joy stole the Joy of the Falling Leaves supporters with an eye-catching move on the turn quickly making up 6+ lengths and by the time they hit the top of stretch B-J had all the momentum rolling to a huge 8 length win in a final time of 1:17.55.
9-2 Subtle Shimmer with Kevin Krigger also kicked it into gear and ran down the tiring Falling Leaves to place 2nd 4 1/2 lengths in front of the favorite. Falling Leaves would hold 3rd by 5 lengths in the race that became a procession. Deep Desires and Kevin Orozco ran 4th followed by Designated Runner and Code of Valor.
Trainer Tom Wenzel said, “with the young ones you just never know how they are going to respond. Clearly, we’d would have liked to have been able to get her to relax early on and she’s still working on changing leads. But how the winner ran not sure any of that would have mattered, that was a nice run.”
Justin Evans trained the runner-up Subtle Shimmer and was pleased with her effort. Evans said, “she’s a fast learner and she’s figuring this game out. This was a really nice run and we knew we’d have pace to run at and we did. We just didn’t know the winner had that effort in her. Great run.”
Bewitching Joy races for Cinco Vino Stables. Trainer Frank Lucarelli was clearly pleased with the run of his young filly. “She’s smart and I knew she had this ability. Also thought maybe the distance might impact Tom’s horse, at least I was hoping so.”
Bedwitching Joy picked up $30,250 and now has $46,480 in earnings. She is now 2-1-0 in 3 lifetime starts.

7th Race 44th WTBOA Lads Stakes Purse $50,000
Trainer Frank Lucarelli only had 1 entry in this one and was again facing a solid favorite in 9-5 Blackberry Jam with Kiaman McGregor up. B-Jam, 7-1 Saint Benji and Kevin Krigger battled with 2-1 Lead the Charge and Silvio Amador for the early lead laying down fractions of 22.51 and 45.31.
Meantime, laying just off the top 3 was Lucarelli’s Cantcatchthiscat with Isaias Enriquez in the saddle. Enriquez was patient but stayed clear to the outside thinking the battle on the front would wear all three runners down and he was right.
At the quarter pole Enriquez took his foot off the brake and Cat circled up to the outside of the trio and quickly ran by all three taking a clear lead. As the 3 front runners battled to hold on, 5-1 Robin Racer with Carlos Montalvo was on the rail and had to wait for an opening. Once the rail opened he slipped through trying to run down Cantcatchthiscat but ended up a clear 2nd. Lead the Charge held on for 3rd with Saint Benji 4th, Vino Viking closed but likely want a lot more distance but did pass Blackberry Jam for 5th.
Cantcatchthiscat ran the 6 1/2-furlongs in 1:16.62 and is owned by Margaret Root. The 2-year-old gelding is a Washington bred by Cat Burglar out of Mahee Moon by Malibu Moon and was bred by Dr and Mrs Jack Root.

8th Race 30th WTBOA Emerald Distaff Purse $50,000
In the 6 deep field going 1 1/16 miles saw the brilliant Aloha Breeze get bet down to 1-1 odds. Carlos Montalvo would quickly put Aloha on the lead opening up by 3 and eventually stretch it to a half dozen lengths laying down fractions of 23.1o and 45.31. As they approached the 3/4 pole it looked like it was a race for place.
However, sitting behind the leader from the start was 17-1 Stay Sassy with Kevin Krigger in the saddle. Krigger felt Aloha Breeze was going too fast and if not then there was way they had a shot anyway. So he sat patiently until the 3/4 pole and Krigger started making a move with Sassy cutting that lead from 4 lengths to just a 1/2 length at the top of the stretch.
Inside the 1/8th pole it was down to these two and Stay Sassy was doing just that putting big time pressure on A-B eventually easing past her in the final 100 yards and posted the upset win by a 1/2 length.
Trainer Tom Wenzel said, “she just got tired at the end there and that was a heck of a run by the winner. They were just a little better than us today.”
Those 2 were 7 lengths in front of 3rd place finisher 6-1 Chai under Kevin Orozco who closed well catching Lapush and Julien Couton. Lapush looked like a potential threat on the turn as well but flattened out in the lane for 4th. Completing the order of finish was Smiling Lady and Vulin.
Orozco and Cooper were both happy with Chia effort but disappointed they couldn’t make a run at the top pair. Cooper said, “She never gave up and had to get by Tom’s horse for 3rd so I like to see that competitivenes.”
Stay Sassy stopped the clock in 1:42.15 and races for the Dave and the Little Lady Stable and trained by Charlie Essex. Essex was on the fence about running but when the race came up a little light he thought let’s give it a shot. In the winner’s circle Essex said, “I was hoping to get 3rd, this is a lot better!”
Stay Sassy is a Washington bred by Stay Thirsty out of Pippa Bou Peep by Harbor the Gold and was bred by the owners Dave and Linda Olson.
This was the first stakes race Stay Sassy has been entered and improved her lifetime record to 5-3-0 from 13 starts. She earned $27,500 and has now banked $91,187.

10th Race 88th Muckleshoot Derby Purse $50,000
7 starters went the 1 1/16-miles in the Derby and the tremendous Si That Tiger from the powerful Blaine Wright barn was the odds-on choice to win it. Regular rider Silvio Amador went with 8-1 He’s Not Talking right to the front. Kevin Krigger eventually allowed Si That Tiger to take the lead as they approached the far turn.
The duo made this a match race right from the start and set fractions of 23.09 and 46.31. Amador then looked to try and put away He’s Not Talking and pulled away to a 2 length lead. The next quarter went in 23.70 for a 1:10.01 6-furlong time.
Amador may have thought he had shaken off He’s Not Tallking but Krigger was giving 3-year-old Washington bred a break and began to re-engage with the big favorite while the two expanded their lead over the rest of the field. Inside the 1/8th pole He’s Not Talking began to pick it and Si That Tiger began to feel the stress of the distance.
He’s Not Talking went roaring past the odds-on choice and quickly put him away cruising to a 4 1/2 length win in a final time of 1:40.98. Si That Tiger was 6 lengths better than 3rd place 34-1 Star Travel and Manny Americano who held off 2nd favorite Bodi Zafa. Calmcoolcollected, Candy Caballo and Big Bowie completed the order of finish.
The winner is owned by the Q Stable which is D J and his wife Nancy McPhee. D J also is the trainer. The win has a lot more significance for the McPhee’s. D J had retired from training several years ago and was happy to be an owner and let longtime NW trainer Bonnie Jenne to handle the barn and the training. Jenne passed away earlier this summer after a battle with cancer.
The McPhee’s were pretty emotional following the win. D J McPhee said that winning the Derby was the one race she always wanted to win and as a group along with the Friendship stable which was Jenne’s daughter Kandie Jennings and 4th owner Craig Fredrickson won it last year with Dynamic Secret.
McPhee said to be able to defend that title was all Bonnie’s doing and he hoped that she would be pleased to see all the work she put into this one paid off just like they had hoped.
He’s Not Talking was bred in Washington by Mr and Mrs William Griffin and is by Brody’s Cause out of No Talking Back by Flatter. He’s Not Talking is now on 2-3-1 from 9 lifetime starts and has now banked $78,280 in earnings.

11th Race 46th Washington Oaks Purse $50,000
The 46th running of the Washington Oaks had a big field of 10 well matched runners going 1 1/16-miles. The favorite Saleen G T was bet down to 3-2 then 3-1 Precise Timing followed by 7-1 Ima Margarita Girl, 8-1 Canterbury Lane, 8-1 Guard Your Spot and 9-1 Race a Roany. Out of the top 6 favorites only two woould hit the board and neither would win.
33-1 Chatty Leroybrown came into the race with not a lot of credentials but trainer Hilario Perez had a feeling his front runner might be able to hang on for a top 4 finish. Jockey David Haldar got the call and set mild fractions of 23.36, 47.37 and 1:11.96 for the 6-furlongs.
It was at this time Haldar felt he might be on to something with a clear lead of nearly 2 lengths turning for home. “I felt at the quarter pole we weren’t going very fast and I looked around and saw no one was close to me so I asked her to go and she did!” (More with Haldar in our interview below). Chatty Leroybrown expanded that lead to 3 lengths as she crossed the wire in a final time of 1:43.18.
Chatty Leroybrown races for owner and breeder Hector Ramiro Preciado. Chatty Leroybrown earned $27,500 for the win and more than doubled her career earnings to $47,020 and a lifetime record of 2-0-1 from 8 lifetime starts.
The race was for 2nd and Ima Margarita Girl with Kevin Krigger was the closest to making a move on the winner but leveled off and did well to hold onto 2nd over the closing Maximum Sparkle. Maximum Sparkle at 11-1 with Carlos Montalvocame from further back and had been the recipe for success for most of the races on Sunday but in the finale not enough pace let the free running front runner control the race gate to wire.
2nd betting choice Precise timing with Kevin Orozco looked to be in great position on the rail and moved up into contention on the turn. At the top of the stretch there was plenty of room on the rail to make a move but when asked Orozco said she just came up empty. Trainer Kay Cooper was a bit frustrated and knew going 2 turns would be a challenge. “There just wasn’t a race for her to go a mile or more anywhere along the way for us to get that long run in her.” She hopes in the future that more races at or close to the distance asked for these horses to run can be available during the season.
The longshot favorite Chatty Leroybrown was one of two starters with a mile race under them out of 10 and both horses got those mile races in maiden claiming races.
Race favorite Saleen G T was a chance for jockey Isaias Enriquez and trainer Frank Lucarelli to record their 3rd stakes win of the day after sweeping the Lassies and Lads to begin the 6 stakes race run. But Saleen G T ran a similar race as Precise Timing but trying to close from further back seemed to hit a wall mid-stretch and ended up 5th.
Finishing the order of finish were Race a Roany, Heras Hope, Princess Fave, Canterbury Lane and Guard Your Spot.

4th Race
8 went the mile in the 4th and 9-2 Arnie Boy with Frank Alvarado broke well and set the early tone. 5-1 Sapello Riddler and Juan Gutierrez quickly joined Arnie and Frank and the pair were neck a neck all the way to the 1/8th pole setting reasonable fractions of 47.14 for the half and 1:13.11 for 3/4’s.
Inside the 1/8th pole the duel began to wear on both the front runners and they battled and set up the closing kick of Don’t Doubt Declan. Manny Amricano released the brakes at the 1/4 pole and swept over both pace setters for an easy win in a final time of 1:37.91. Don’t Doubt Declan races for John Parker and trained by Candi Cryderman. He’s a Washington bred by Conveyance out of Society Girl by Soft Gold and was bred by Mr and Mrs W. R. Wulff.
Arnie Boy ground out the place, Sapello Riddler took 3rd and Hunting for Gold with Chel-c Bailey completed the top 4 finish.

5th Race
18-1 Creative Om with Adrian Castellanos went to the lead and never looked back in this 1 mile and 70 yard run finishing in a time of 1:39.13. Creative Om was a clear winner by more than 2 lengths and races for Emily and Vicory Majkrzak and trained by Jorge Rosales. Chief Wild Eagle with Kevin Krigger also ran a big one at 12-1 to take 2nd, finishing 3rd was Quality Cat with Kevin Orozco and Naval Escort with David Haldar who finished 5th was moved up to 4th after a DQ.
1-9 odds-on favorite Chuckanut Bay was tiring at the top of the lane and shifted toward the rail cutting off I’m Noble causing him to clip heels and go down tossing jockey Alex Cruz. That led to San Andres trying to avoid the collision throwing Julien Couton off as well. The Stewards concluded that Chuckanut Bay should be taken down for causing the chain reaction.
