9/5/25

(Chehalis, WA) Two of the most consistent state contenders in the 2A classification in the 2020s opened up their season against one another on Friday night. The North Kitsap Vikings entered 2025 after a down year in 2024 due to injuries and never really got going before things went off the rails. Now, the Vikings are hungrier than ever to get back to the state playoffs and make a run towards Husky Stadium

For the WF West Bearcats, a home opener always adds an extra element and level of excitement to the equation. With a senior heavy class graduating after a trip to the state semifinals last fall, the Bearcats weren’t looking for a rebuild, but rather a reload for their football team. A really tough opponent to begin the season is just what the Bearcats wanted as both these teams believe that iron sharpens iron.

North Kitsap 23, WF West 15

North Kitsap received the opening kick and sent sophomore quarterback Teague Weible out to lead a veteran offense. Weible used his legs to make a couple of big plays but at one point he slid short of the first down and it should have brought up fourth down. A flag would keep the drive alive however and Weible ended up with a 21-yard scramble. Miles Martin made a couple of big plays for WF West to stall the drive but Andrew Knott nailed a 44-yard field goal to get North Kitsap on the board with a 3-0 lead.

WF West had their own sophomore QB as Wyatt Hoffman now leads the offense. A nice return gave the Bearcats good starting field position and a heavy dose of Miles Martin in the run game moved the Bearcats down the field. A flag on the Vikings this time would extend the Bearcat drive and move them inside the 20. Hoffman found receiver Connor Coleman, who missed the entire 2024 season with an injury, and his first catch back was a 15-yard touchdown. WF West responded nicely and grabbed a 7-3 lead.

North Kitsap added on three more thanks to a Kyree McGinity 23-yard catch and run, setting up a 28-yard field foal by Knott to make it 7-6. WF West began to march down the field before the 1st quarter came to an end and the game completely changed. North Kitsap’s defense all of a sudden dug their heels in and forced a turnover on downs deep in their own territory. Things didn’t look good after the Vikings fumbled to give the Bearcats the ball at the nine, but on the very next play North Kitsap took it right back. Almost the entire 2nd quarter was played in Viking territory, but WF West couldn’t find anymore points.

Late in the quarter, Andrew Knott was forced to punt again from deep on his own side of the field. He would get off a very good punt and it was mishandled by the Bearcats. North Kitsap recovered the muffed punt and finally had the ball on the Bearcat side of the field. A very tough stretch throwing the football in the 2nd quarter was erased in an instant as Teague Weible found Cooper Anderson for a 35-yard touchdown with 12 seconds left in the half. The tones changed as the teams headed to the locker rooms as North Kitsap had taken the lead 13-7.

WF West did get the ball to start the second half, but a fumble on the second play of the drive gave North Kitsap’s defense a third takeaway. The Vikings settled for another Andrew Knott field goal from 30 yards out to make it 16-7. WF West then had major issues on offense as they struggled to move the ball against a rejuvenated North Kitsap defense.

The Viking defense just continued to stymie the Bearcats. WF West’s defense was keeping them in the game with constant pressure on the sophomore QB in Weible, but the pressure seemed to become comfortable for the Vikings leader. Weible continued to use his legs to extend plays while keeping his eyes down the field. He did just that and was rewarded as Tyler Prouse was left wide open behind the entire defense. Weible delivered the ball to Prouse in stride and he took it 66 yards for the score. North Kitsap was beginning to roll as their lead grew to 23-7.

WF West kept trying to air it out deep but the intermediate passes to Holden Kunz were the only plays working for the Bearcats. As time continued to run in the 4th quarter, things looked very bleak for the Bearcats. Interceptions by Evan Williams and Ethan Blue gave North Kitsap five takeaways to protect the two-score lead. Late in the game, Wyatt Hoffman found Connor Coleman for another touchdown, this one from 39 yards out. A successful two-point conversion cut the Bearcat deficit to just eight. An onside kick was attempted, but the Vikings were all over it and kneeled it out. A successful road trip on week one for North Kitsap was complete as they knocked off WF West, 23-15.

Stats and MVP

Our Thorbeckes Athletic Clubs MVP of the game went to the linebacker/kicker for North Kitsap in Andrew Knott. The senior was flying around making plays on defense and was also a perfect 4-4 on kicks while also putting together some nice punts from deep in his own territory. Knott drilled field goals from 44 yards, 28 yards, and 30 yards to just add onto his strong day on defense.

Sophomore quarterback Teague Weible was terrific for North Kitsap and went 6-15 passing for 136 yards and two touchdowns through the air while running the ball nine times for 36 yards. Kyree Mcginty tallies 11 carries for 11 yards and a 23-yard reception. Townsyn Walsh also added seven carries for 15 yards and a 4-yard catch while Cohen Meis had a one-yard carry and 4-yard catch. No receiver caught more than one pass for the Vikings as Tyler Prouse had a 66-yard touchdown catch while Cooper Anderson had his own 35-yard touchdown reception. Ethan Blue also had a 4-yard reception and an interception on defense. Evan Williams added an interception while Spencer Weir had a sack on defense as well

For WF West, Wyatt Hoffman made his first start at QB and went 15-28 passing for 209 yards and two touchdowns while adding 66 yards on 13 rush attempts. Miles Martin had 14 carries for 50 yards, two catches for 11 yards, and a sack on his busy day on defense. Hiroto Smaciarz tallied three carries for five yards and an 11-yard reception while Graysen Serl had two carries for nine yards and a 3-yard catch. Connor Coleman was the go-to receiver with five catches for 109 yards and two touchdowns, but Cohen Kunz had a strong day as well with six catches for 75 yards. Kade Mohoric, Josh Vigre, and Peyton Santiago all recorded a sack on defense.

North Kitsap will look to move to 2-0 as they continue their season opening road trip next Friday night when they visit the Lynden Christian Lyncs. WF West will try to earn their first win on Friday night as they remain at home to host the Capital Cougars. Both games will kickoff at 7pm.
