9/9/25
RA Long 4, Napavine 0
(Napavine, WA) Girls soccer season got underway last week and ESN had our first broadcast of the season on Tuesday evening. It would be a nonleague, 2A vs. 2B matchup between two state teams from a year ago. The R A Long Lumberjills rolled into town coming off of a win over Centralia last week. They would look to tame another Tiger on Tuesday as they made the trip to Napavine to visit a quarterfinalist from a season ago.
Napavine came out of the gates slow but senior keeper Taylen Evander kept R A Long off the board early despite some really good looks. Hayden Kaut and Hannah Fay but together some nice runs with Briley Fay but could never cash in on a strong shot on goal. R A Long then began to break through and never looked back. Delanie Zeuger took a fast break from midfield all the way to the goal to make it 1-0 Lumberjills in the 16th minute. Josie Sully added not one, but two goals off of some fancy footwork. Amayah Salas added another with a picture perfect shot in the 28th minute to make it four goals in rapid succession. Napavine never got anything going in the attacking third and faced a 4-0 deficit at halftime.
The second half was a much different story. Hannah Fay dropped back to be a primary defender almost shadowing Josie Sully to prevent the hat trick. Clara Fay also got more aggressive from her sweeper position to slow down both Breslyn Scheel and Sienna Dorlund, who still both got some opportunities. Hayden Kaut also began to make some runs with Jenna Gallagher and Ava Wilson but they still couldn’t solve the defensive puzzle of R A Long. Delanie Zeuger, Madeleine Smith, Audrina Solano, and Amayah Salas kept it a quiet night for keeper Iliana Ruiz for the Jills.
On the other side, Taylen Evander had a phenomenal performance with 11 saves. The defense played much better in the second as did the Napavine offense but Evander still had to make a few really high level saves. She would keep a clean sheet for the second half but the R A Long defense was too strong for Napavine to cut through. 4-0 would be the final as R A Long made a statement with a strong win over Napavine.
Our Thorbeckes MVP of the match went to Josie Sully for R A Long. The sophomore has a lot more pressure on her to score this season and stepped up on this night. Sully earned two goals and neither came easy as she had to create her own space on both to get the shot off. She narrowly missed out on a hat trick a couple of times but still made a big impact on the match.
The win bumps R A Long to 2-0 on the season and they will have their home opener on Thursday at 6pm when they host another Central 2B foe in the Toledo Riverhawks. Napavine drops to 0-2 on the season and will look for their first win on Thursday at 7pm when they host Raymond/South Bend.
