Graham-Kapowsin Eagles 31, Skyview Storm 0

(Elk Plain, WA) Last year, Skyview stormed back from a 17-0 deficit in the 4th quarter to win a nail-biter 21-17. Last week, Graham-Kapowsin took down reigning 3A State Champions O’Dea in dramatic fashion, 40-38. The two teams met again for another non-league matchup early in the 2025 campaign.

Graham-Kapowsin began the game with the ball and chewed up nearly half of the first quarter as part of a 10-play drive. Sophomore sensation, A.J. Tuivaiave, found his main target, Kase Betz, who broke a tackle and scored the game’s first touchdown from one yard out to give the Eagles a 7-0 lead. Graham-Kapowsin forced a Skyview punt and on the second play of the drive, Jah’ano Corpuz caught a pass from Tuivaiave and ran 48 yards to flip the field. Skyview held G-K to a punt despite giving up the big play and went to work offensively. The Storm had a nice drive brewing, but after 12 plays, had to punt it away to the Eagles. Graham-Kapowsin got the ball with 7:47 left in the first half and used all but eight seconds of it on a 17-play drive. The drive started from their own 13-yard line and marched down the field to the three. Skyview’s defense did a great job of bending but not breaking as the Eagles settled for a field goal from Matthew Vollmer, who knocked it through for a 10-0 Graham-Kapowsin halftime lead.

Skyview had the first possession of the second half, but Graham-Kapowsin’s defense held the Storm to a three-and-out. The Eagles struck quickly, as they connected for three plays of 12, 18, and 14 yards to put the ball at the six-yard line. Junior running back, Blake Pearson, scooted into the end zone, behind great blocking from his offensive line, to give the Eagles a 16-0 lead. Skyview picked up a first down on their next drive, but couldn’t move the ball further and needed another punt. Graham-Kapowsin chewed up more clock again, taking off nearly eight minutes of action with a 14-play, 53-yard drive, resulting in Jhyson Laupati running in a one-yard touchdown. G-K went for two, and Tuivaiave hit Quinncey Ratteray in the corner of the end zone for the two-point conversion as they took a 24-0 lead.

Early in the fourth quarter, Skyview took a deep shot, but Mazaia Roberson grabbed the interception around the 15-yard line and turned upfield. He reached midfield and was swallowed up by multiple Storm players, but Eagles reinforcements helped push the pile another dozen yards, giving Graham-Kapowsin great field position at the 37-yard line. It took only three plays for the Eagles to find the end zone for the fourth time, as Tuivaiave lofted a pass with perfect touch to Keh’ano Corpuz for a 16-yard touchdown to give Graham-Kapowsin a 31-0 lead. Mazaiah Roberson had another interception as Skyview drove inside the 10-yard line and time ended up running out as Graham-Kapowsin took the victory, 31-0.

Our Sumner Holiday Inn Express Game MVP went to Graham-Kapowsin’s Blake Pearson. Pearson had the one rushing touchdown, but was a crucial part in the Eagles’ offense, rushing the ball for positive yards every time he touched the ball, and ran fiercely all night long. Establishing the run game with Pearson went a long way for Graham-Kapowsin and that earned the junior running back MVP honors.

Graham-Kapowsin had great efforts from Keh’ano Corpuz, Jayce Halasz, and the entire defensive line of Quinncey Ratteray, Jeremiah Leumuava, Joey Savusa, Julius Hernandez-Avila, JT Ioane, Adrian Tela, EJ Levaula, and Tua Steffany.

Skyview’s Jacob Rojas was a tackling machine, and seemingly was part of every play defensively for the Storm. Soren Gibbs had a great night receiving, Hunter Flory made impacts in all three phases of the game, and TyAllen Edmon made some great defensive plays.

Graham-Kapowsin is now 2-0 and will host Emerald Ridge on Thursday. ESN will be streaming the game, with the Centralia College Pregame Show starting at 6:45 PM and kickoff at 7.

Skyview falls to 0-2 on the season and will travel to Puyallup on Friday to go up against another SPSL opponent.
