Timberline Blazers 54, Washington Patriots 6
(Lacey, Washington) Timberline continues its strong start to the season, improving to 2-0 after defeating the Washington Patriots. Timberline was coming off a down year last season, when they only went 1-9, but have had a complete turnaround to start this year. Washington went 3-7 overall in the 2A South Puget Sound, but has had success in recent years, as they made their way to a state tournament appearance in the 2022-23 season. They unfortunately are 0-2 to start the year but are still in high spirits as they faced a very tough opponent in a different classification.
Timberline started off the first quarter with a touchdown on their first drive, which managed to take up almost half the quarter. Cooper Jones found his way into the endzone with a 4-yard touchdown to begin what would be the start of a great game for the junior running back. The Blazers’ offense got into a groove early and established an effective running game and short passes that started to rack up yards quickly. Blazer receiver King Spearman also got his night started early with a 40-yard reception midway through the first. Timberline would lead 6-0 after the first quarter.
Cooper Jones got into the endzone for his second touchdown of the night to start the second quarter for Timberline. Washington would then take possession and go three and out, but on the punt, there was a botched snap that escaped the hands of Washington’s Alo Galeai. Rafael Matias-suira would jump on the ball in the endzone for the Timberline touchdown and bring the score to 22-0. Washington’s starting QB would go down with an injury that sidelined him for the remainder of the game, and Kyan Edwards would take over the QB spot for Washington. Edwards would throw an interception to #10 David Tyrell that would give Timberline excellent field position. Cooper Jones would then score a 4-yard touchdown for his third of the night to bring the score to 28-0. Timberline would get the ball back towards the end of the second quarter, where QB Cameron Vongdara would unload a huge pass to King Spearman for the 47-yard touchdown. Timberline led 36-0 at halftime.
Washington would receive the kick to begin the third quarter and would go three and out. The Patriots would punt it away but Timberline muffed the catch and the ball bounced right into the hands of Washington. Patriots would capatalized with a 6 yard touchdown run from Ano Galeai. The Blazers would bounce right back and running back Chammp Hernandez bursted through the Washington defense for a 52 yard run and was tackled at the 7 yard line. Vongdara would throw a fade route to Spearman for the 7 yard touchdown for his second touchdown of the night. Timberline took back possession at the end of the third quarter and capped it off with a 17 yard touchdown run from Neil Deri. Timberline led 48-6 going into the 4th quarter.
Mercy rule came into effect in the 4th with running clock. Both teams sent out their young players to get some varsity experience in what would be a quick quarter. The only touchdown of the quarter came from back up QB Dalton Abbott on a 10 yard run. Timberline takes the game 54-6 and moves to 2-0 while Washington falls to 0-2.
