(Kent, WA) On a night that O’Dea’s Head Coach Monte Kohler was making state history recording his 395th win, Kentwood’s 1st year Head Coach Quincey Davison was getting his 1st win. For a 2nd week game of the season these may be the two most consequential wins a coach could possibly have and to have them both happen on a Thursday night in week 2 is an incredible coincidence.

The Conks were coming off a loss at Emerald Ridge in a game they were in right to the end but some mistakes cost them. The focus was on cleaning up those mistakes and they did that pretty well against an athletic and tough non-league opponent in Spanaway Lake.

Kentwood’s offense got things started on their 1st possession when QB Brandon Tagle found Tre Mayfield for a 16-yard strike. The PAT failed and the Conks led 6-0 with 5:05 to play in the 1st quarter.

The catch by Mayfield was his 1st of the season after getting banged up early in the season opener at Emerald Ridge. Mayfield didn’t get cleared to play on Thursday until earlier in the day.

Spanaway Lake began their 2nd possession on their own 35 and were marching down the field lookiong to tie and or take the lead. On the 8th play sophomore QB Jericho Martin’s pass was intercepted in the endzone by Lupe Muipu. Muipu and the defense were just getting started.

After a Kentwood fumble Spanaway Lake would take over with the ball on the 34. The Sentinels Martin dropped back to pass and the ball would go through the hands of Malik Burns and Kentwood’s Kalen Hollins was there waiting catching the ball at the 30, then zoomed 70 yards for the pick 6. The 2-point PAT attempt failed and it was 12-0.

Kentwood’s defense would snag 3 more interceptions before the half was completed and Muipu would finish with 3 picks.

The Conks finished off the scoring in the 1st half when Tagle again found Mayfield from 16 yards out with 2:32 to play in the half. Tagle then found Rocco Miceli for 2 to make 20-0 going into the break.

Tre Mayfield breaks away

On the first drive of the 2nd half Kentwood iced the game when Tagle found a streaking Mayfield and put the ball perfectly between two defenders right into Mayfield’s hands without breaking stride and was gone 53 yards into the endzone. Those two would connect on the 2-point PAT to make it 28-0 less than a minute into the 2nd half.

The Sentinels would put together their best drive of the night on their 1st possession of the 2nd half starting on their own 41. From the KW 35, Martin would find Burns down the left sideline who went up for a spectacular catch and ended up on the 5 yard line for a 1st and goal from the 5. On the next play Martin handed off to Damar’ae Barrington who plowed into the endzone for the score. The PAT failed and it was 28-6.

The teams would trade multiple possessions but no further scoring would happen and that was the final score.

The Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP of the game went to Kentwood’s Lupe Muipu with his 3 interceptions, multiple tackles and for being in single coverage for much of the game. It was close because both Tre Mayfield and Brandon Tagle could have easily been named but we felt the defense earned this win for the Conks. The play of the game was certainly Kalen Hollins 70-yard pick 6.

Had Spanaway Lake pulloed off the win we liked Malik Burns who also returned a kick-off 97 yards for the touchdown but was called back for a holding call. That was after Kentwood’s 1st touchdown and may have changed the wholoe pace of the game had it stood. We also liked Jared Faulkner’s effort on defense and the running from Barrington.

Kentwood is now 1-1 for the season and Kentwood will play their 3rd straight Thursday night game at Auburn Riverside. Spanaway Lake drops to 0-2 and will host Federal Way next Friday.
