Onalaska 22, Napavine 12
(Napavine, WA) A big 2b showdown took place in Napavine as the Onalaska Loggers went on the road to take on the Tigers. Both teams are 2b powerhouses that have seen major success in the last decade under head coaches Josh Fay (Napavine) and Mazen Saade (Onalaska). The Loggers are known for pounding the ball on the ground and executing a stellar running game. The Tigers are more of a big-play team that will mix in the run and the pass. Both teams met helmet to helmet in a 2b classic.
The Loggers started the game with a good drive down the field before being stopped on 4th down near the goal line. Napavine would take over around the 23-yard line for their first possession of the game. They would march down the field quickly, as Grady Wilson would have a massive 52-yard run to bring the Tigers to the 26-yard line. Caleb Von Pressentin would get a couple of carries to inch them closer to the endzone, before Grady Wilson would run the ball in for an 11-yard touchdown. Napavine would strike midway through the first quarter. Onalaska was not fazed, though, and would get the ball back and march right down the field with their heavy running attack. Ethan Thayer would get the handoff at the 50-yard line, burst through the hole, and take it all the way to the endzone. Onalaska would get the two-point conversion and take the lead 8-6. On the first play of the next drive for the Tigers, they would fumble the ball, and Onalaska would recover it and take back possession. First quarter came to an end with the Loggers leading 8-6.
Onalaska started the second quarter with excellent field position and continued its dominant running attack. They made their way to the 10-yard line before Carson Albertson would get a ten-yard run into the endzone for the touchdown. After a successful two-point conversion, the Loggers led 16-6. Both teams settled into a rhythm on defense and didn’t let each other have much success on offense the rest of the quarter. Onalaska found their way into the red zone, but would fumble the ball, and Napavine would recover and take over on offense. With time winding down in the half, Napavine tried to get a late drive going, but couldn’t connect on a few passes before halftime. Onalaska would lead 16-6 at half
Similar story in the third quarter where both teams were at a stalemate on offense and both defenses started to come alive. The biggest difference maker in the game was the time of possession for Onalaska. They dominated ball control all game and gave the Tigers very little opportunities to try and mount a comeback. They were extremely good on 3rd and 4th down conversions that hept the ball in their hands. Also because they are so run heavy, it allowed the clock to keep running and time to start running out. Napavine started to get things going late in the third quarter and found their way inside the 10 yard line as time ran out. Onalaska maintained the 16-6 lead going into the fourth.
Napavine got off to a great start to the fourth quarter and would score quickly on a 5 yard touchdown run from Caleb Von Pressentin. The Tigers would not get the 2 point conversion though and would trail 16-12. Onalaska would get the ball back and did what they did all game so well. The Loggers continued their dominant time of possession and held the ball for almost the remainder of the game. The dagger came when Lane Gordon would throw a 30 yard touchdown pass to Haze Hamrick. The Loggers had only thrown 3 passes all game and on their final one made it count to put them up 22-12. Both teams would trade possession and the Tigers got the ball back on their own goal line with about one minute left to play. They tried to muster so big plays but couldn’t connect as time wound down. The Onalaska Loggers would win 22-12 vs the Napavine Tigers, both teams are now 1-1.
