(Scottsdale, AZ) The two rounds of stroke play have wrapped up from the 44th U.S. Mid-Amateur, and Seattle’s Paul Mitzel has advanced to match play. Mitzel was one of four players from Washington who teed it up from Troon Country Club, and will be one of 64 players from around the world with a chance to win the title this week.

In the first round, Mitzel shot a two-over 73, but minimized mistakes to put himself right in the thick of making the cut. bogeyed the second and fourth holes but birdied the fifth on the front for a one-over 36. On the back, he bogeyed 10, birdied 14, and bogeyed 18 to go one-over again, but fired a 37. Mitzel started on the 10th hole in the second round and bogeyed it and the 12th. He recovered with birdies on the 16th and 18th holes to go out in even par. After bogeys on the first and second holes, Mitzel recovered with a birdie on the third and sixth holes. A bogey on eight gave him a one-over round of 72, and three-over for the two days. Mitzel finished T-45 and one shot safe from being in a playoff.

Seattle’s Jake Utley missed the cut after a two-day total of 16-over par. Snoqualmie’s Erik Olson withdrew from competition, and Vancouver’s Austin Spicer missed the cut at nine-over.

There will be 10 players playing in a playoff tomorrow morning for the final three spots of match play to finalize the 64-player bracket. Arizona’s Cody Massa and Florida’s Patrick Dewey were the co-medalists. California’s Stewart Hagestad, who was on the Walker Cup team for the United States last weekend and is a three-time winner of the championship, finished T-3, one shot back of the co-medalists.
