9/14/25
(Seattle, WA) 16 games remained as the Seattle Mariners began a four-game series with the Los Angeles Angels to wrap up their penultimate homestand in the 2025 regular season. Thanks to a sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals, the M’s found themselves right back in a tight race with the Houston Astros in the AL West, entering their final series with the Angels just a game back of Houston in the division.
Texas was also breathing down the necks of the Seattle Mariners as Seattle knew that a let down with the Halos not only could deal a big blow to their division hopes, but also could knock them out of a playoff spot completely. Not only that, but the Angels have given the Mariners some problems this season, although Seattle won the two games the teams played in Seattle. With every game meaning so much more down the stretch, the pressure was on for Seattle to make the last two weeks of the regular season very meaningful.
Mariners 7, Angels 6 (12) (Game One)
Another chaotic game took place in the opener between the Angels and Mariners. After a marathon game with the Cardinals the night before, Seattle had to grind away another game.
Seattle started hot with a couple of two-run doubles by J.P. Crawford and Julio Rodríguez. Logan Davidson’s first home run of his career got the Angels on the board. A Chris Taylor sacrifice fly and a groundout by Luis Rengifo brought the Angels to within one at 4-3. Mike Trout homered against the M’s again with his 21st of the season and 399th of the season to tie the game.
Things would go to extras and the Halos would take the lead in the 11th on an RBI single by Taylor Ward. Seattle responded to tie the game at 5-5 on an RBI single by J.P. Crawford. In the 12th, Matthew Lugo singled home a run to put the Angels back in front until a Jorge Polanco doubled tied it back up. A few batters later, Harry Ford pinch hit in the pitcher’s spot with the bases loaded and nobody out. The rookie got the job done with a sacrifice fly to right for his first career walk-off, giving the Mariners their sixth straight win 7-6.

In game two, Luis Castillo looked really strong for Seattle as he has at home all season long. Seattle pitching carved through the Angels with strikeouts as following Bryce Miller’s 11 strikeout performance, the Mariner staff struck out 11 more on Friday night.
Seattle struck first in the 4th, cashing in on a Cal Raleigh double with one out. Jorge Polanco doubled yet again for his 24th of the season. Eugenio Suárez got the stop sign at third and it cost them as Mitch Garver grounded out, forcing them to settle for a 1-0 lead.
A great catch by Victor Robles took away a couple of runs for the Angels but the Halos would tie the game up in the 7th. A wild pitch turned a Luis Rengifo single into a double and Logan Davidson hurt the M’s again with his second double of the season to tie the game at 1-1.
In the bottom of the 7th, Mitch Garver did come through in the clutch. With one out, Garver hit his ninth home run of the season out to left field for a solo shot, giving the Mariners a 2-1 lead. Andrés Muñoz spun a quick 1-2-3 inning in the 9th to make it seven wins in a row for the Mariners, 2-1.

Looking to make it eight wins in a row, the Seattle Mariners had their #1 starter in 2025 on the mound in Bryan Woo on Saturday. Seattle gave him the early lead with a two-run double by Jorge Polanco in the 1st inning. Woo would get hit early as Jo Adell homered for the 36th time this season and Bryce Teodosio singled in another run to make it 2-2 in the 2nd.
J.P. Crawford put the M’s back in front in the bottom of the 4th with his 10th home run of the season to make it 3-2. With the bases loaded in the 5th, Josh Naylor snuck a grounder through to bring home two more and make it 5-2. Woo settled in after a bumpy second and struck out a career-high 13 batters while walking one in six innings with two runs on three hits allowed.
Matt Brash had to pitch the 9th to give Andrés Muñoz a night off and got off to a bumpy start. A solo blast by Taylor Ward was his 31st of the season and cut it down to a 5-3 lead. Jo Adell then singled to bring the tying run to the plate. Brash settled in and got Christian Moore to hit into a big double play. Logan Davidson then struck out swinging to end the game, giving the Mariners a 5-3 win.

Mariners 11, Angels 2 (Game Four)
Game four was never close and after being embarrassed by Kyle Hendricks earlier in the season, Seattle got their revenge. Cal Raleigh got the game started with his 54th home run of the season, tying Mickey Mantle for the most home runs by a switch hitter in a single season. Seattle continued to pull away in the 3rd with an RBI double by J-Rod before a sacrifice fly by Josh Naylor and RBI single by Dominic Canzone made it 5-0.
Things got blown open in the 4th as Seattle continued to roll offensively. J-Rod added another double to bring home another run. A two-run single by Josh Naylor made it 8-0 and the M’s were clearly motivated by the Astros loss earlier in the day. Dominic Canzone made it double digits with a two-run single before J.P. Crawford added one more with an RBI double, making it 11-0.
The Angels would get a couple of runs but George Kirby was incredible on Sunday. Kirby went 6 1/3 innings and allowed two runs on three hits with no walks and 14 strikeouts. Mariner pitching was completely dominant the entire weekend as Seattle completed the sweep of the Angels 11-2 to win their ninth straight game and take a one-game lead over Houston for the AL West lead.

What’s Next
Seattle (82-68) have now won nine consecutive games and while they didn’t cover as much ground over the weekend as they would have liked, they did cover enough. The Mariners overtook Houston for first place in the AL West, but will enter Tuesday with just half of a game lead over the Astros after Houston beat Texas 6-3 on Monday. That also puts Seattle 3 1/2 ahead of Texas and Cleveland if they did fall back into the third Wild Card. The M’s are only three games behind Detroit for the #2 seed in the AL and the Mariners own the tiebreaker with a 4-2 advantage over the Tigers in the head-to-head matchups in the regular season.
Kansas City (75-75) has fallen back quite a bit and are now on the brink of elimination from the playoff race. The Royals are 6 1/2 out of a Wild Card spot after going 2-5 last week in Cleveland and Philadelphia. Everything would have to go the Royals way for them to make the playoffs for the second consecutive season but things just have not clicked for the Royals in 2025. Their additions to go with Bobby Witt Jr. and Vinnie Pasquantino have not worked out and rotation injuries have really just piled on Kansas City this season.
Seattle and Kansas City split a four-game series in Seattle back in July and to the surprise of absolutely nobody, Salvador Perez was a problem in that series. Over those four games, Perez went 6-17 with three doubles and five runs batted in. In his career, Perez has an .826 OPS against Seattle with 16 doubles, 12 home runs, and 44 RBI. Add to it that when the M’s and Royals play in Kansas City, complete chaos always follows and the teams have split the last 10 meetings at Kauffman Stadium 5-5. It could be a very wild week.
