Gig Harbor 6, Lakes 1

(Lakewood, WA) Two teams out of the Puget Sound League that made the 3A girls soccer state tournament a year ago did battle on Tuesday night as we continued to work our way into the season. After earning the #1 overall seed in last year’s state tournament, the Gig Harbor Tides came into 2025 with a chip on their shoulder and looking to avenge the early exit from last year’s state run. For the Lakes Lancers, a state berth last season was a huge stepping stone for the program but they were looking to continue to build on that foundation laid down last season.

Gig Harbor quickly overwhelmed the Lakes defense and opened things up early with a goal in the 5th minute by Karin Heikkila to give the Tides a 1-0 lead. Amanda Bailey did a nice job with Emily Miller on the backline for the Lancers to put a stop to a couple more really good looks for the Tides, but eventually Gig Harbor would add on. Nadia Schwab scored in the 8th and 28th minute to extend the lead to 3-0. A beautiful corner was put in the back of the net by Taylor Sullivan in the 31st minute before Janelle Jones added one more in the 34th minute. Gig Harbor’s defense also slowed down attacks from Braelyn Carey and Kendall Griffin to keep a shutout alive with the Tides taking a 5-0 lead into halftime.

The second half was a different story but did not start out much different from the first half. Gig Harbor added a sixth goal in the 46th minute by Sage Sturrock to make it 6-0. Lakes then began to go toe-to-toe with the Tides for a very even final 30 minutes of the match. Angela Saldana stepped up defensively for the Lancers to prevent Gig Harbor from adding on. A nice cross in the 54th minute would get Lakes on the board as it was chested in by Randellah Tanuvasa. That would be the final goal of the match as the Tides would go on to get the 6-1 win over Lakes.

Our Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP of the match went to Karin Heikkila for Gig Harbor. With a goal and plenty of set-ups for her teammates, Heikkila was the centerpiece of the attack for Gig Harbor and will be a dangerous puzzle to solve for the rest of the 3A classification.

The win moves Gig Harbor to 3-0 on the season and they will look to remain perfect on Thursday in a rivalry matchup with Peninsula at 7:30pm. Lakes falls to 1-2 on the season and will try to get back on track on Thursday at 7pm when they visit Bellarmine Prep.
