(Sumner, WA) Sunset Chev Stadium in Sumner hosted 2 unbeaten teams on Tuesday night. The 2-0-0 Woodinville Falcons and the 2-0-1 home team Sumner Spartans.

Woodinville 3 Sumner 2

The Falcons set the tone early with a high powered attack that resulted in a shot on goal just 2 minutes into the match. In the 12th minute a penalty in the 18 yard box lead to the 1-0 lead. Woodinville’s senior center back Zoey Lavezzi stepped up for the Falcons and put the shot just out of reach of Sumner keeper Devon Bankers.

Bankers wasn’t done making saves in the half she made a pair of saves in the 22nd and 24th minutes from point blank range to keep it a 1-0 game.  The PK ended up being the lone goal in a fast paced first half.

Halftime Woodinville 1 Sumner 0

The Spartans came out of the halftime break looking like a new team. Whatever coach Robi Turley said to her team worked as they got the equalizer goal in the 47th minute. After a shot was cleared out of the Woodinville penalty area it landed at the foot of senior defender Khloe Mahaffey who wasted no time sending the shot from well outside of the box for the 1-1 tie.

5 minutes later it was freshman forward Sydney Berry taking the ball from deep in the Sumner area all the way down the near sideline. She shed a couple defenders and finessed a shot past Woodinville goalie Jordin Jones for the 2-1 Sumner lead.

Woodinville’s other center back junior Madison Deal evened the score in the 60th minute. A corner taken by Kaya Tanaka found Deal in a crowd and Madison hit the back of the net for the 2-2 tie.

It was a full team effort that got the Falcons the winning goal. Kaya Tanaka sent a pass to Gisele Alcaraz at the top of the 18 yard box. Alcaraz quickly found a streaking Lucy Wimsatt whose shot got blocked by Sumner keeper Bankers. The ricochet landed at Jordan Medd’s feet and she tapped it in for the final goal of the match.

Our Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP went to Woodinville’s Kaya Tanaka for her assist and tireless effort leading the Falcon charge.

Woodinville improves to 3-0 on the season and opens Kingco play with a match against North Creek on 9/18. The Sumner Spartans are now 2-1-1 with a non league match at Gig Harbor on 9/20.
