(Puyallup, WA) Two Rams met head-to-head on the gridiron on Thursday night at Carl Sparks Stadium in Puyallup. In the final non-league game for both the Silas Rams and the Rogers Rams, someone’s 0 would have to go as the two 2-0 teams took the field under the lights. Looking to give the alumni a nice gift on Homecoming, Rogers would try to duplicate their 76-27 win over Silas from last season with their high-octane offense. For Silas, revenge was on their minds as they looked to spoil the festivities. The result would be a thrilling Thursday night high school football game.

Silas 30, Rogers (Puyallup) 26

Silas began the game with the football and got off to an electric start. Dan Williams ran the opening kick back for a touchdown, but a block in the back negated the points and brought the Silas offense on the field. A bad snap would make it a short series as Rogers recovered the fumble for the game’s first turnover. Rashard Boone then led his offense right down the field with his arm and his legs. A read option would put a bow on the first Rogers drive as Boone kept it himself for a 10-yard touchdown run. A big swing of momentum early put Rogers out in front 7-0.

It would be a nice response from Silas on their next series. The rushing attack of quarterback Bradly Pittrof and Truth Hopkins moved the Rams right down the field in a slow and methodical drive. Penalties and snap issues continued to plague Silas as they couldn’t get out of their own way in a two steps forward, one step back approach. They would work onto the Rogers side of the field before once again some issues pushed them back. They would face a fourth down and brought out junior kicker Landon Kingston to attempt a 51-yard field goal. The kick would bounce off the crossbar and through for a successful bomb to get Silas on the board trailing 7-3.

A snap issue for Rogers would end their next drive with a quick three-and-out to give the ball back to Silas to begin the 2nd quarter. Once again the Silas offense kept the ball on the ground with Pittrof and Hopkins with a lot of read options and triple options working extremely well. When they did decide to throw it, it paid off as Bradly Pittrof found his brother Zachary Pittrof on a post route and Zachary broke one tackle and was gone for a 43-yard touchdown. There were issues with the extra point but Silas had still taken the lead, 9-7.

With Rogers trailing for the first time in the game, Rogers went with an aerial attack on their next series. Rashard Boone started to spread the ball out and found his brother Quintton Boone a couple of times on the series. A big chunk play to Liam Epperson moved Rogers into Silas territory for a 28-yard gain. A brother-to-brother touchdown pass from Rashard to Quintton was erased as Rashard was beyond the line of scrimmage when he let go of the ball. It only delayed the inevitable as on fourth and long Rashard Boone found Jaden Kiblinger who fought his way into the endzone for a 24-yard touchdown. A successful response put Rogers back in front 14-9.

With 4:32 left in the half Silas had plenty of time to respond and did not hit the panic button, staying true to their run first offense. The one thing they could not overcome were penalties as they continued to move in the wrong direction while the Rogers defensive line started to win up front and get in the backfield. The running lanes became smaller and smaller and Rogers defense came up with a fourth down stop to end the half. In the battle of the Rams, it was Rogers with the 14-9 lead over Silas at halftime.

Rogers began the second half with the football and they had a change in philosophy for the second half. They came out and attacked the Silas defense with a relentless rushing attack adding another man to the backfield. Titus Koch was joined by Nicholas Vaughan and the duo was unstoppable getting plenty of help from their offensive line. While it wouldn’t be a super long drive (3:09) it would end in a score as Vaughan ran it in for a four-yard score. The lead grew to two possessions for Rogers as they had a 20-9 advantage after a missed PAT.

It would take almost no time at all for Silas to respond and keep themselves in the game. They would only need two plays and once again it was through the air that the Rams would strike. Bradly Pittrof would find Riley Foster on a quick slant and Foster turned on the jets and was gone. 66 yards later the senior receiver was in the endzone and Silas had cut it right back to a one possession game, trailing 20-16.

The next Rogers drive would be a long and time consuming march. The Rams kept the ball on the ground once again with Koch and Vaughan while also adding Roman Petty to the mix as a hard running back to bring down. Only twice on the drive did Rogers throw the ball and one was on the final play of it. Rashard Boone looked like a magician escaping pressure and he would find his brother Quintton Boone for a diving catch in the endzone. The two celebrated the two-yard score but a failed two-point conversion kept Rogers lead at 26-16.

With time starting to run low, Silas looked to be in trouble facing a quick three-and-out. A 15-yard penalty would move it from 4th and 16 to 4th and 1 giving the Rams the opportunity to go for it. Bradly Pittrof moved the chains and kept the drive alive and made Rogers pay for a rare penalty. It was back to a ground and pound offense but a 31-yard completion from Bradly to Zachary Pittrof was the chunk play Silas needed. Truth Hopkins would spin away from a defender on the next play and was shoved into the endzone by Emmett Stewart for a 12-yard score. Things got very interesting to start the 4th quarter with the Rogers lead down to 26-23.

It looked like Rogers would kill a chunk of the clock again as they moved the ball down the field with the rushing attack. On a third and long, Rogers was forced to go away from the ground game and had to try to air it out. Rashard Boone never had a chance as Silas brought pressure and Emmett Stewart got to him for the sack to make it fourth down. A turnover on downs would be the result and Silas had the ball with 5:43 left and a chance to take the lead.

Silas would again not panic and never got away from their offensive gameplan of running the football. Bradly Pittrof and Truth Hopkins continued to find running lanes and they calmly marched down the field while also forcing Rogers to burn their timeouts. With under a minute to go, Silas was knocking on the door of the endzone. A short one-yard QB keeper by Bradly Pittrof got the job done and with just 40 seconds to go Silas had taken a 30-26 lead.

Rogers knew they needed a touchdown but without any timeouts and needing to go 80 yards, it was going to be tough. Rashard Boone started the series with an easy completion and a 15-yard penalty helped keep the drive moving. On second down at midfield, the Silas defense made the final play. The secondary locked everything up and eventually Devonte Sumpter made his way to the quarterback. Boone never saw him coming and a big hit forced the ball out and it was recovered by Silas. That would be the knockout blow as Silas came back in the final minute to stay undefeated with a 30-26 win over Rogers.
