Spanaway Lake Sentinels 24, Federal Way Eagles 10

(Elk Plain, WA) The Spanaway Lake Sentinels and the Federal Way Eagles crossed over for a 3A/4A afternoon affair. Spanaway Lake was looking for its first win of the season while Federal Way was seeking a third straight 50-point effort to begin the 2025 season.

Federal Way started the game with the ball and was moving the ball down the field, but Spanaway Lake’s defense made their first of many big plays, recovering a fumble as Owen Johnson jumped on the loose ball for the Sentinels. Spanaway Lake turned it over on downs, but on the very next play, forced another fumble to get the ball right back. The Sentinels drove into Federal Way territory and attempted a field goal, but it was no good. The Eagles were beginning to march down the field once more before Cordae Cummings jumped in front of the pass for the interception, forcing the third turnover of the first half.  Two plays later, Jericho Martin hit Malik Burns for a 40-yard gain to put the Sentinels inside the five-yard line. Spanaway Lake kicked a field goal with Jesse Xaxalpa booting it through to put the Sentinels up 3-0 with eight minutes left in the first half. Federal Way responded on the next drive by taking the ball inside the red zone and kicking a field goal themselves. Gio Vergara-Trujillo knocked home a 26-yarder to tie the game at three apiece. Later in the second quarter, De’Nali Faletogo came up with an interception for Federal Way after the pass was tipped to set up the Eagles in plus territory, but they were forced to punt, which ended the half.

With the game tied 3-3 to begin the third quarter, Spanaway Lake’s Malik Burns broke the ice himself. Burns took the kickoff 93 yards to the house to give the Sentinels a 10-3 lead and a boatload of momentum just 18 seconds into the second half. After a pair of punts, Federal Way was driving, once again getting inside the 20-yard line of Spanaway Lake, but the Sentinels defense made their mark again. Cordae Cummings picked off his second pass of the game and went 87 yards on the interception return for a touchdown to make it 17-3 with Spanaway Lake out in front, just halfway into the third quarter. Just four plays later, Cummings recovered a Federal Way fumble to put the offense back on the field. Martin and Burns connected again, this time for a 57-yard touchdown as the Sentinels held a 24-3 lead with four minutes remaining in the third quarter. In the fourth, Federal Way would score as Raymond Toso capped off an 11-play drive with a three-yard touchdown to give the Eagles a chance with five and a half minutes left in the game. The Eagles defense did their part, forcing a quick Sentinels punt, but turned it over on downs with a minute to go after driving down the field. Spanaway Lake would pick up the victory 24-10 for their first win of the season.

Spanaway Lake improves to 1-2 on the season and will face Yelm next week on the road in their first SPSL-South matchup.

Federal Way is now 2-1 on the season and will play Enumclaw on Thursday. The game will be streamed on ESN with the Centralia College Pregame Show starting at 5:45 PM and the kickoff at 6 PM.

Our Sumner Holiday Inn Express Game MVP went to Spanaway Lake’s Cordae Cummings. Cummings had two interceptions, one for a touchdown, and a fumble recovery, and covered tons of ground defensively for the Sentinels. His leadership on the field helped Spanaway Lake slow down a very talented Federal Way offense.

Spanaway Lake’s sophomore quarterback Jericho Martin was fantastic and didn’t look like a sophomore, running the offense very nicely for the Sentinels. Malik Burns just as easily could’ve been the MVP of the game with his phenomenal all-around performance and DJ Sillers ran the ball very nicely.

Federal Way’s De’Nali Faletogo, Miles Fuavai, and Jojo Fuavai were absolute game wreckers. The trio was buzzing around the field on defense, constantly making big plays and not letting the Sentinels’ ball carriers out of their grasp. Kace Carter delivered some big hits while Jay Sinclair and Zamarie Tellez were dangerous as always with the ball in their trustworthy hands.
