River Ridge 5, Lakes 0
(Lacey, WA) District play is underway in the 3A classification as the Lakes Lancers went on the road to take on the River Ridge Hawks. Lakes was 1-3 to start the season. This isn’t indicative of their talent, though, as they have strong defense and skilled scorers on offense. River Ridge is coming off a little bit of a down season last year, but has caught fire early in this season. Both teams looked to get their first district win in this 3A showdown.
The tale of the game was defense all night. In the first half, neither team had dominant possession of the ball. It seemed that with each passing second, the other team would take the ball back. Because of this, a lot of balls went out of bounds and led to throw-ins, but not many opportunities for either team to shoot. The first goal of the game came with 29:00 minutes left on a penalty kick from Averee McClelland. The Hawks maintained the lead for almost the entire first half, as neither team would let the other get a chance to try to score. With 6:00 minutes remaining in the half, Michele Pringle got the ball on the far side of the field and unleashed a massive shot at the goal that soared past Lakes’ goalie Brissia Barajas. A high-arc and impressive goal from Pringle had the Hawks leading 2-0 at halftime.
The second half was similar to the first. Lots of throw-ins and changes of possession between the teams. Lakes started to get a little more aggressive on offense to start the half, but the defense of River Ridge was punishing all night. With 19 minutes left in the game, a foul was called, leading to a free kick for the Hawks. Pringle would be given another opportunity to strike again, and she capitalized. She was about 30 yards out and on the far side of the field, and decided she was going to take a shot at the goal. The ball soared in the sky and again got past Barajas, the goalkeeper. After this, all the momentum was on River Ridge’s side, and they did not let up. With 9:50 remaining, Michele Pringle would get the ball again and fire one in for her third goal of the night. Pringles’ night would not end there, as she would cap off her night with another great goal with under 2 minutes remaining in the game. River Ridge would win the game 5-0 and move to 4-1-1 while Lakes fell to 1-4.
MVPs and Stats
Our Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP of the game was a no doubter, Michele Pringle had herself 4 goals with three of them being amazing kicks from what felt like miles away. She would get the hat trick and then some and lead her team to the victory with her superb offense.
Averee McClelland also had a goal for the Hawks and Wendi Odum had 6 saves herself as gthe goal keeper for River Ridge. Goalie Brissia Barajas had 6 saves as well for Lakes. Ultimetly the offense from Pringle and the outstanding defense from the Hawks were the difference makers in this game. Lakes will be at Captial on the road on 9/25. River Ridge next game will be on the road at Peninsula on 9/25
