(Seattle, WA) The Seattle U women’s soccer team are coming off a 4-2 loss to Washington State. Their first of the season and the first game in their new conference the West Coast Conference. Pepperdine opened their WCC campaign with a 6-0 win over Oregon State. The Redhawks look to right the ship with a win at Championship Field.

The Waves got on the scoreboard just 5 and a half minutes into the match. Kyra Murphy led a counter and found Julia Quinonez who notched her fifth goal of the season. Quinonez wasn’t done; she added her 6th goal off a perfectly taken corner. Tatum Wynalda took the kick and sent it to the back post where Peyton Leonard’s header sent it back to Quinonez for the 2-0 Waves lead.
The score was 2-0 but the Redhawks had their chances out shooting the Waves 10 to 5 and seemed to control most of the possession. Seattle U got on the board in the 40th minute on a pass from freshman defender Jaelyn Byeman. The pass found Marla Gaudlitz in the air getting the header off just past the Pepperdine keeper for the 2-1 halftime deficit.

In a wild turn of events in the 74th minute a red card was shown to Seattle U’s Alana Lamb. Lamb and Pepperdine forward Tatum Wynalda met at the ball just outside the penalty area. Lamb went for the ball and caught Wynalda’s heel and after VAR was shown red. Tatum Wynalda took the free kick, sending it just over the wall and just inside the post past a diving Kassidy Kirgan for the 3-1 Waves lead.
Seattle U regrouped and mounted a counter of their own. Zoe Hopkins’ seemingly endless motor had her flying down the wing all game. In the 78th she sent a cross in and found U’i Kaaihue who turned and fired for her first goal of the season. In the end the deficit was too much to overcome and the Waves won 3-2.
With the loss the Redhawks find themselves 0-2 in WCC play and 4-2-4 overall. They travel to Santa Clara on October 4th for an afternoon match. Santa Clara is 1-0-1 in WCC play and 5-4-1 overall.
