(Lakewood, WA) More SPSL 2A Thursday night football was on tap as we returned to Harry E. Lang Stadium. This time around, the Clover Park Timberwolves would play host to the Fife Trojans, who Clover Park has not beat since 2012. With the league rattled after Orting’s upset of Franklin Pierce last week, things felt wide open as the two teams entered their third league game of the season.

Fife was looking to make it back-to-back victories after shutting out Washington last week for their first win of the season. On the other side, Clover Park struggled to finish drives and prevent the explosive plays in a loss at home to Steilacoom.

Fife 44, Clover Park 0

Fife started the game with the football and faced an early third down. They would convert on a 25-yard pass from Mattson Ducharme to Slavik Shemedyuk to move the chains and keep their opening drive alive. Zee Willimas had a couple of explosive plays which set up a 19-yard touchdown run by Shemedyuk to give Fife the 6-0 lead.

Clover Park couldn’t do much on offense to begin the game with a quick three-and-out to give the ball back to the Trojans. This drive wouldn’t go as planned as on the first play the Timberwolves forced a fumble and recovered to get the ball in Fife territory. They would then face a fourth and three and Donte Roberts found Divinity Mauia but the Trojans brought in down after just two for a turnover on downs. A few plays later, it was Carlos Reyes breaking a 46-yard score plus getting the two-point conversion to make it 14-0.

Clover Park got their first first down of the game on the next drive, but still had to punt as Fife’s defensive front of Labor Day Nielsen, Tony O’Brien, Nathan Spencer, and Zeke Sierra dominated in the trenches. Sacks from Kannon King and Zeke Sierra helped Fife get the ball back and they marched down the field yet again. Zee Williams bounced back from his fumble to score from 29 yards out to make it 21-0.

Fife had one more shot to score before halftime, but an interception by Colin Boykin ended that series and gave Clover Park one more possession. Donte Roberts left the game with an injury and Alexander Charles took over at QB. He had some success running the football which helped Rayson-Marcel Jonas get going as well. A dropped pass once they got to the Fife 14-yard line stalled the drive out as a sack would run the clock out for the first half shortly after and Fife kept a 21-0 lead at halftime.

The Trojans once again dominated up front to completely shutdown the Timberwolves offense. Adding to that, Fife found explosive play after explosive play and erased the turnovers in the second half. Mattson Ducharme found Slavik Shemedyuk for a big 78-yard touchdown to extend the lead. Shemedyuk had another 57-yard touchdown run while his brother Volody Shemedyuk found the endzone from 27 yards out as well. A safety was mixed in and it all resulted in Fife’s second consecutive shutout victory with a 44-0 win over Clover Park.

Stats and MVP

Our Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP of the game went to Slavik Shemedyuk for the Fife Trojans. The senior receiver went off for Fife with three carries and three receptions for a total of 195 yards and three touchdowns. Half of his touchdowns ended in scores and he was also dangerous in the return game as well as playing really good defense, slowing down a dangerous receiver in Colin Boykin. It was one of the top performances we have seen this year and made it an easy decision for our MVP.

Also for Fife, Zee Williams had a strong day on the ground with seven carries for 80 yards and a touchdown. Carlos Reyes tallied four carries for 67 yards and a score while Romin Burley had one carry for six yards. Mattson Ducharme went 7/10 through the air for 129 yards and a touchdown in a very solid performance. Ben Stevenson caught two passes and Luke Ours had a 16-yard reception as well. Defensively, Fife forced a safety and had a total of five sacks with Kannon King having 2 1/2, Zeke Sierra and JayBoy Quiocho each had one, and Tony O’Brien had half as well.

For Clover Park, Rayson-Marcel Jonas had 10 carries for 43 yards to lead the Timberwolves offense. Alexander Charles also carries the ball eight times for 69 yards while going 1/3 for four yards passing. Amin Brassell had two carries for four yards to cap off the ground game. Donte Roberts started the game at QB and went 3/5 for 15 yards while Andre Williams went 0/2 through the air but did have five carries on the ground. Divinity Mauia had all four receptions for 19 yards. Colin Boykin added an interception on defense.
The win moves Fife to 2-3 on the season and 2-1 in SPSL 2A play. The Trojans will look to make it three consecutive wins next Friday night when they host Steilacoom at 7pm. Clover Park falls to 1-4 on the year and 0-3 in the SPSL 2A. They hope to get their first league win next Friday night also at 7pm when they travel to take on Washington.
