Lakes 48, River Ridge 0
(Lacey, WA) These two PSL 3A teams met at South Sound Stadium on a foggy night of football. Lakes is off to an outstanding start to the season by going 4-0 coming into this game. They have been dominant all season on offense and defense, and don’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. They went up against the 1-3 River Ridge Hawks and their new head coach, Tim Claridge. The Hawks have seen a lot of coaching turnover in the last couple of years, which has made it hard to establish a concrete identity, but coach Claridge is up to the task.
First Half
After electing to receive the ball to start the game, Lakes went right to work on their first drive. They marched down the field with a strong rushing and passing game from the likes of QB Jadis Lefono and RB Toetu Moliga. Within a few plays, they were already in scoring position. Lakes capped off the opening drive with a 12-yard touchdown run from Moliga. After the touchdown, Lakes kicked off, Kaine Aguon was back to receive for the Hawks, and burst through the hole for a 45-yard punt return. This gave the Hawks the ball on their own 44-yard line. Unfortunately, the defense of Lakes would be too much to handle, as they would three-and-out after two tackles for losses. The Lancers would get the ball back and march down the field again. Lakes would charge down to the 9-yard line and give the ball to Moliga again for a 9-yard TD. Lakes led 13-0 after the first quarter.
The second quarter was very similar in how it unfolded. Nothing that River Ridge did could seem to stop the penetration and swarming of Lakes’ defense. The Hawks would get the ball, but penalties and a sack would be their undoing. Lakes got the ball at midfield and again went right down to score on a 5-yard TD run from Korben Reed. The Lancers would stop River Ridge again and get the ball at their own 32-yard line with a minute left in the half. It took one play and six seconds to score as Lefono went deep to Ean Owens for the 32-yard touchdown pass. Lakes went into the half leading 28-0
Second Half
The second half played out just like the first for Lakes. Kaine Aguon again had a massive 56 yard return to start the half for River Ridge and give them excellent field position. River Ridge could not capatalize though and would be stopped on fourth down. Lakes would take back over possession but a few plays later fumble the ball. The Hawks recovered the fumble and got the ball back. They again could not capitalize and gave the ball right back to Lakes. On their next possession, Lefono aired out a moonball that was caught by Tristan Baker who broke away for the 77-yard touchdown. River Ridge would have productive drive next as they would get the ball to their own 30-yard line. They would send their kicking unit out onto the field but the kick was blocked. Tristan Baker picked up the ball and return the blocked kick for a 85-yard touchdown. Lakes led 42-0 going into the fourth quarter.
Due to the mercy rule, running clock came into effect in the fourth quarter. The quarter went quick as backups came in for both teams. Towards the end of the quarter. Koi Calhoun found Amar’e Ellis for a 35-yard touchdown in what was a spectacular catch from Ellis. Time would wind down and expire and Lakes takes the 48-0 victory.
MVP and Stats
Our Thorbecks MVP of the game went to Tristan Baker for the Lancers. He tallied 6 catches for 125 yards and a 77 yard touchdown reception. He also had the 85 yard blocked field goal return in the third quarter that solidified his MVP status.
