(Lakewood, WA) First place in the Puget Sound League Nisqually division was on the line on Friday night when the Peninsula Seahawks traveled to Harry E. Lang Stadium to battle the Lakes Lancers. With only the first place teams in each the Nisqually and Narrows division earning a bye into the Round of 32 and the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place teams having to play an elimination game in week 9, seeding is everything in the always tough 3A league and the winner would have the inside track to the Round of 32.

Peninsulas did not have the best start to their season. Losing their first two games to Gig Harbor and Curtis tested the Seahawks early, but three consecutive wins over Bonney Lake, Capital, and North Thurston had the vibes high as Peninsula looked to send a message to the rest of the state. For Lakes, they have been dominant so far this season entering Friday at 5-0 with two shutouts already on the season and the offense improving every single week.

Lakes 48, Peninsula 7

Tristan Baker took the opening kick back just short of midfield to give Lakes good starting field position to begin the game. An early drop didn’t help the Lancers, but a seven-yard completion from Jadis Lefono to Ean Owens gave Lakes a chance on fourth and short right out of the gate. It would be a jet sweep as the ball was handed to the wide receiver in Ean Owens and he found the edge and was gone. Even better than a first down, the junior took it 48 yards for the score, giving Lakes an early 7-0 lead.

Peninsula’s first offensive drive started nicely as Lucas Wiseman found Trevor Bingham for a 13-yard gain on the first snap of the drive. After a Jake Martin six-yard run, Wiseman looked for another short completion. Toetu Moliga had other plans and jumped the route, getting the pick and taking it back 45 yards for a pick six. Just seven plays from scrimmage into the game, and Lakes had a 14-0 lead.

The next drive for the Seahawks started well again with Bingham being the go-to receiver for Lucas Wiseman. However, it would stall giving the ball back to Lakes and the Lancer offense just could not be stopped early. A big 46-yard run for Toetu Moliga had the second offensive drive rolling for Lakes as they moved right into Seahawk territory. It would be another wide receiver run that ended the drive as Tristan Baker took it in for a 17-yard score to make it 21-0 Lakes in the 1st quarter.

Peninsula was in a tough spot and needed a strong drive to put some pressure on Lakes. A QB keeper by Lucas Wiseman would move the Seahawk offense into Lakes territory for the first time in the game. Jake Martin would also start finding some space while Trevor Bingham was catching everything in his vicinity. However, once they got the ball inside the 30-yard line, a high snap would see the ball hit the turf and it was recovered by the Lancers. The drive was over in the blink of an eye as Lakes forced their second turnover.

Lakes would give it back to the Seahawks on their own fumble on a handoff attempt but Peninsula could not do anything with it. Lakes started to really slow down the Seahawks after a couple of strong drives and the Lancers quickly put that turnover behind them. On their final drive of the first half, Lakes marched right down the field and freshman quarterback Jadis Lefono had his number called and he answered with a 13-yard touchdown run. That would be the final score of the half as Lakes led Peninsula 28-0 at halftime.

To open up the second half, Peninsula would have the football but could not figure out the Lakes defense. A penalty killed the opening drive of the half and gave Lakes the ball for the first time in the third quarter. Lefono was in a groove throwing the football and Lee Snyder started to really get involved in the offense with a couple of catches for 16 and 19 yards respectively. Royal Charles would make a big tackle for a loss, but Lakes just could not be stopped. Depiste some penalties, Jadis Lefono would throw a jump ball to Tristan Baker who went up and made a fantastic catch for an 18-yard score to extend the lead to 34-0.

From that point on it was a lot of ground and pound for Lakes with Korben Reed taking over in the backfield and shining himself. Reed would end up scoring a couple of touchdowns to get the running clock with 56 yards on the ground in the second half alone. The Seahawks would get on the board on a double reverse where Talen McDonnell found Lucas Wiseman on a QB-to-QB 37-yard touchdown pass, but one last interception by Raziah Patterson put this one away. It was a dominant performance by the Lakes Lancers as they took down the Peninsula Seahawks 48-7 to stay perfect on the season.

Stats and MVP

Our Sumner Holiday Inn Express MVP of the game was freshman quarterback Jadis Lefono for the Lakes Lancers. The freshman has looked wise and composed beyond his years all season long and took care of the football on Friday night, using his arm and legs to propel the offense. Lefono went 14/18 through the air for 191 yards and a touchdown while running the ball four times for 28 yards and a score on the ground as well. It was a great job from a quarterback with a very bright future.

Koi Calhoun also got in at QB for the Lancers and went 2/2 for 50 yards passing. Ean Owens had the most receptions with five for 59 yards and ran the ball four times for 66 yards and a touchdown. Lee Snyder finished with four catches for 76 yards while Tristan Baker had three catches for 58 yards and two carries for 40 yards and two total touchdowns. Raziah Patterson had a 16-yard catch, Jaiden Wiggins a 12-yard catch and Corey Irish an 11-yard catch. Korben Reed carried the ball 11 times for 70 yards and two touchdowns while catching an 8-yard pass. Toetu Moliga did it on both sides of the ball with six carries for 67 yards and a pick six on defense. Tau’ Mareko also had a sack on defense while Raziah Patterson had an interception. Jude Grape went 6/7 on extra points in the kicking game.

For Peninsula, Lucas Wiseman led the way, going 12/21 passing for 88 yards, running the ball seven times for 38 yards, and catching a 37-yard touchdown from Talen McDonnell on his only pass attempt of the game. Jake Martin carried the ball 10 times for 23 yards and two catches while Thomas Marzano had two carries for 29 yards and two catches for six yards. Trevor Bingham had a very good day with seven catches for 59 yards while Logan Johnson had a great 24-yard reception. Royal Charles was the star on defense and registered a tackle for a loss on the defensive front.

With the win, Lakes is now 6-0 and 3-0 in league play with sole possession of first place in the PSL Nisqually division. Lakes will look to keep the zero in the loss column on Thursday at 6pm when they visit the Timberline Blazers. Peninsula has their three-game winning streak come to an end, dropping to 3-3 and 2-1 in league play. The Seahawks will play in the same stadium as Lakes but on Friday at 7pm when they visit River Ridge.
