(University Place, WA) Bob Lucey Field hosted the Battle of the Vikings with Puyallup in town taking on Curtis. Puyallup came in with a 6-1 league record and 10-3 overall. Curtis came in at 7-4-1 overall and 5-3 in the 4A SPSL. The Curtis Viks finished 3rd in state last year and are trying to right the ship after 2 league losses in a row.
In The First Half
Curtis’ back line was under constant pressure and starting keeper Nora Bell made an incredible save in the 13th minute to keep the match scoreless early. Sophia Baradat, Cecilia Durand Liv Lorella, and Hoku Mose had their hands full with the high powered Puyallup attack.
Puyallup had a majority of the possession early with Ella Bach and Teagan Thompson controlling the middle of the field. The high pressure paid off for Puyallup in the 23rd minute.
Ella Bach collected the ball down the sideline and fired a shot from a sharp angle for the 1-0 lead. Just 5 minutes later Kenzie Thompson, fresh off the bench made it 2-0 Puyallup. That would be the last goal of the first half.
Halftime Puyallup 2 Curtis 0
Puyallup continued to press the Viks, scoring just 3 minutes into the 2nd half. Ella Bach sent a pass into the 18 yard box and Isabel Ostrander chipped it over the keeper for the 3-0 lead.
Ostrander wasn’t done scoring, adding another goal in the 47th off a throw-in by Mackenzie Hardesty. The 4-0 lead was impressive since Curtis had only allowed 9 goals coming into the match.
The Curtis Vikings had no quit in them down 4-0 and that grit paid off in stoppage time. A free kick into a packed 18 yard box by Curtis was sent into the back of the goal by Elizabeth Stark.
MVP and Up Next
Our Holiday Inn Express MVP went to freshman Isabel Ostrander for the 2nd half brace. Ella Bach put in a good effort with a goal and assist but got edged out by the freshman.
Puyallup is now 7-1 in league and they host Yelm at Sparks Stadium on October 21st. Curtis is now 5-4 in league and on a 3 match losing streak. The Viks head to Graham Kapowsin on the 21st and finish the regular season with a home match against Yelm on the 28th of October.
